IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

We are provided with two pictures of Grange Park, the first picture is from 1920 whereas the second picture reflects how it looks like today. If we compare both of them we can see a clear difference that in 1920 the overall condition was completely opposite. In 1920, at the top right corner of the park there is pond for water plants that is upgraded to a children's play area today. Moreover, in 1920 there was a water fountain in the centre of the park in front of entrance whereas today when you enter the park there is a beautiful rose garden and seating arrangement around it. At the bottom right corner there is a glass house in 1920 that is replaced with water feature. The place where there was rose garden in 1920 now serves as the cafe. In addition, if we talk about the left side of the park, at the top and bottom we have rose gardens and in the centre of then we have a stage for musicians, it also have sitting area at its 4 corners. On the contrary if we look the left side of park today, there is big area for Amphitheatre concerts that includes a stage along with the sitting area like stadiums and a rose garden at the left side of garden.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying and reporting the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and comparing them with the present layout, such as the transformation of the pond into a children's play area and the glasshouse into a water feature. However, some areas are under-developed or lack precise spatial referencing, such as the vague description of how the seating and rose gardens have shifted around the centre. While a general overview is present, the reporting tends to list details chronologically or spatially without fully synthesising the overall changes, preventing the response from reaching a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to sequence the changes from 1920 to the present using basic transition markers such as "In 1920", "Moreover", and "On the contrary". However, the cohesion is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, with several sentences linked by simple conjunctions ("and", "that"). Furthermore, the lack of proper paragraphing—writing the entire body of the response as a single, dense block—weakens the overall logical progression and structure, limiting the clarity of the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully describe various features of the park such as "rose garden", "glass house", "amphitheatre concerts", and "water feature". There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though word choice and collocation are occasionally awkward, such as "big area for Amphitheatre concerts" or "sitting area like stadiums". Spelling and word-form errors are minimal and do not impede communication, but the range remains restricted and relies heavily on repeating terms from the prompt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as "If we compare both of them we can see a clear difference that in 1920..." There are several grammatical errors regarding tense consistency, article use, and prepositions, including "there is pond for water plants", "in the centre of then", and "it also have sitting area at its 4 corners". While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication. However, the frequent reliance on run-on clauses connected by commas rather than proper punctuation prevents the control from reaching a higher standard.
