IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The map shows a public park of year 1920 when it first opened and the same park in another picture of today.

Overall, there are so many changes occur after renovation. there are many newly things added and some older things removed from there.

It is immensely clear that, in year 1920's park there was fountain at the front of entrance but now it is removed and rose garden and seats added in the place of fountain. In old garden there was stage for musicians and seats in west direction which is replaced by amphitheatre for concerts.

There are many other changes in park. In 1920, there was glasshouse in southeast direction which is now changed with water feature. The seats are removed from east directions. In old park there was rose garden in north direction which is changed with cafe and there was a pound for water plants in northeast which is replaced children's play area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and comparing them with the modern layout. Key developments, such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and seats, the creation of an amphitheatre, and the addition of a café and children's play area, are accurately reported. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention of changes in the eastern and southern areas lacks deeper extension and specific spatial context. The overview provided in the second paragraph outlines general trends successfully, showing elements of higher band performance by summarising the overall transformation before detailing individual changes, although it could be more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from an introduction to an overview and specific comparisons. Paragraphing is used to separate different sections of the park logically. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'In old garden' and 'In other changes in park' lack smooth integration, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous use of 'there'. Paragraph breaks are present, but internal cohesion markers need to be used more flexibly and naturally to progress to a higher level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map, incorporating terms like 'renovation', 'amphitheatre', 'glasshouse', and 'water feature'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'many newly things added', 'changed with' instead of 'replaced by', and spelling/form errors like 'pound' instead of 'pond'. The vocabulary attempts are sufficient to communicate the main points, but frequent minor errors in word choice and lexical control prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'In 1920, there was glasshouse in southeast direction which is now changed with water feature.' However, grammatical accuracy is limited by frequent errors, including missing articles ('there was fountain', 'in southeast direction'), preposition errors ('in year 1920's park'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('changes occur'). Complex structures are often faulty, and punctuation is inconsistent, with sentences starting with lowercase letters. These frequent errors require the reader to occasionally pause, placing the performance firmly within this band.
