Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of Grange Park between 1920 and today, thus meeting the requirements of a solid performance while showing elements of higher achievement. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting general trends such as urbanisation and the addition of public facilities. Key transformations are highlighted, including the replacement of the fountain and musical stage with an amphitheatre and rose garden, as well as modifications to the north and southeast corners. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies, such as the claim that seating is now 'only available at the centre of the park', whereas the map shows additional seats surrounding the central rose garden and other areas. Overall, the information is well-selected, presenting a clear summary of the spatial changes over time.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from an introductory overview to specific area-by-area comparisons. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, general trends, and detailed body points. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Focusing on the major changes', and 'Furthermore'. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or faulty, as seen in the slightly disjointed sentence openings and referencing issues, such as 'which is now only available at the centre', where the precise antecedent is slightly unclear. Additionally, punctuation errors like 'in 1920. there used to be' disrupt the flow of sentences. To reach the next band, referencing and logical transitions need to be executed with greater flexibility and precision.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items related to maps and urban development, such as 'urbanise', 'amenities', 'amphitheatre', and 'water feature'. However, there are noticeable word choice, word form, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For instance, 'urbanise' is used instead of the correct adjective form 'urbanised', 'weastern' contains a spelling error, 'cafe' lacks an accent, 'build' is used instead of the past participle 'built', and 'glassdoor' is an inaccurate lexical choice for 'glasshouse'. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features clearly, and meaning is rarely impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses ('which was replaced by', 'which gives the facility') and past/present tense contrasts appropriate for comparing maps across time. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include tense and aspect inconsistencies, such as switching awkwardly into the present tense in 'the cafe and the children's play area are build', punctuation errors like the stray period in 'in 1920. there used to be', missing articles in 'underground car park', and an incomplete sentence ending abruptly with 'underground'. These errors represent a typical pattern for this band level, where simple structures are generally controlled well, but complex attempts introduce frequent minor slips.
