Student answer (Band 6.5)
The map illustrates a public park's floormap in two time period , one in 1920 and another in present.
Overall, the park noticed a major change in its center and seatplan from the past . Additionally, we can see notable modifications in the west side of the park . Along with this , we can see a new addition of underground car parking facility being introduced in the present in the southeast part of the park.
In 1920, the park consisted of three rose gardens, which was reduced to two gardens , one being the center of the attraction of the park , replacing the fountain from the past map plan. Furthermore, the seats are now surrounded by the central rose garden which was scattered in the boundary line of the park in the past.
We can further notice that, the rose garden of the southwest part and the stage for musicians was later replaced by a modern amphitheatre for concerts in west. Significantly, the glasshouse was also removed and a new water feature was established in place of the glasshouse. In the northeast side, the major change was the replacement of pond of water plants with children's play area. Similarly, the rose garden of north was also demolished and a cafe was built in that place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by covering the main features of Grange Park in both 1920 and the present day. You successfully highlight key transformations, such as the introduction of the amphitheatre, the replacement of the fountain with a central rose garden, and the addition of the underground car park. However, some ideas are a little generalized or under-developed, such as the exact spatial shifts of the seating areas. To reach a higher level, ensure all major changes are fully elaborated with precise comparative details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow a logical progression through the park's changes. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In 1920', and 'Furthermore', but referencing and linking are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, as seen in repetitive phrasing like 'we can see' and 'we can further notice'. To improve, vary your transitional phrases and ensure seamless transitions between sentences and paragraphs without relying on repetitive formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an Academic Task 1 response, successfully attempting less common items like 'amphitheatre', 'modifications', and 'demolished'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'floormap' instead of 'layout' or 'map', and awkward collocations like 'center of the attraction'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, refine your vocabulary choices for greater precision and natural stylistic collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and prepositional phrases. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in west', 'in present'), plural agreement issues ('three rose gardens, which was reduced'), and unnecessary spacing around commas. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To progress further, work on grammatical accuracy, particularly article usage and subject-verb agreement in complex sentence structures.
