Student answer (Band 5.5)

The plan illustrates the changes that have seen in Grange Park since 1920 till today. Overall, the park has gone under construction and various changes has made. Firstly. the Fountain which was in center of the park has changed into Rose garden with seats around it for the visitors.

In 1920, the park has a simple layout where there was a stage for musicians behind the fountain. Rose garden were located in the north east corner with the pond for water plants near to the garden. There were entrance from the both sides of the fountain with seats available in every corner of the park.

Today, the park looks like more developed and advanced. There is now rose garden in the middle of the park with seating area. Also, there is a playground for children with the cafe on side. The Amphitheatre for concerts has been added in the park. Underground car park is there near the water feature.

Finally, the care park now has been changes than before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by outlining some of the main changes in Grange Park between 1920 and today, such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and the addition of an amphitheatre. However, the information is somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, several details are imprecise or misplaced, such as stating that rose gardens and a pond were located in the north-east corner in 1920, and the overview lacks a clear summary of the overall spatial transformation. Key features like the conversion of the glasshouse into a water feature or the shifting layout of paths and entrances are omitted or glossed over. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to select and report all key features more accurately, providing a clearer overview and more fully developed comparisons between the two time periods.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation in the response, beginning with an introductory sentence, moving to details about the past, and concluding with current features. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the paragraphing is somewhat erratic, with sentences broken awkwardly (e.g., 'Firstly. the Fountain...'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically or are inadequate, with repetitive transitions and faulty referencing, such as 'Today, the park looks like more developed' and the abrupt final sentence 'Finally, the care park now has been changes than before.' which contains lexical and structural confusions. To improve cohesion, the writer should ensure logical sequencing of ideas from past to present, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices to link sentences and paragraphs, and maintain a consistent paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic descriptions of the park, such as 'fountain', 'rose garden', 'stage', and 'playground'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'gone under construction' instead of 'undergone renovation', 'the care park', and 'has been changes'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are often inaccurate. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range with more precise map-specific vocabulary (e.g., 'replaced by', 'transformed into', 'situated in the northern quadrant') and improve word choice and spelling accuracy to ensure seamless communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic present or past tense constructions. Attempts at complex sentences and passive voice are frequently faulty, such as 'changes that have seen', 'various changes has made', 'Rose garden were located', and 'the park has a simple layout'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles ('the Fountain', 'the cafe'), and prepositions ('on side' instead of 'on one side'). These frequent errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater accuracy, ensuring proper tense consistency and agreement throughout the response.
