Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, coming in at only 86 words, with 14 words copied directly from the prompt left uncounted. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally and tangentially. While the student attempts to highlight several changes between the 1920 map and the current layout—such as noting that the glasshouse was redesigned into a water feature and the central fountain was replaced by a rose garden—the information is severely restricted and lacks an overall summary or comprehensive coverage of all main features. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the length requirement is fully satisfied and present a well-developed overview comparing the key transformations across the park.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged coherently, reflecting a basic level of organization. The text consists of isolated sentences rather than a cohesive progression, with abrupt transitions and repetitive sentence structures starting with location details. Paragraphing is absent, as the response is written as a single fragmented block of text. Cohesive devices are minimal or inaccurate, such as the awkward transition 'however, pond' or starting sentences with lowercase letters. To improve, the student needs to group related information logically, use appropriate paragraph breaks, and employ a variety of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the spatial comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, providing a minimally adequate range for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic terms and direct labels from the prompt, such as 'rose garden', 'glasshouse', and 'children's play area'. There are noticeable word choice, word form, and spelling errors that impede communication and reveal poor control over less common lexical items, as seen in expressions like 'reconstruct into' instead of 'reconstructed into' or 'well struchtured' instead of 'well-structured'. To achieve a higher score, the student must expand their vocabulary range, use precise synonyms for describing map changes, and ensure accurate word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammar demonstrates a very limited range of structures, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent errors. There are persistent mistakes in articles ('the plans compares', 'in the center fountain'), capitalization ('eldon street', 'in the center'), prepositions, and verb forms ('is reconstruct', 'is redsinged'). These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and distort the meaning of the sentences. To progress, the student needs to practice basic sentence construction, improve subject-verb agreement, master passive voice structures for describing alterations, and pay closer attention to punctuation and capitalization.
