Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers several changes between 1920 and today, such as the introduction of a café, an amphitheatre, and an underground car park, but it addresses the task only partially. While an overview is attempted in the opening sentence, the selection of features lacks clarity and some key details are omitted or insufficiently developed. For instance, the central fountain's replacement by a rose garden and seats is mentioned, but other spatial shifts, such as the relocation of the water feature and the precise changes to the eastern and western boundaries, are described with limited clarity. The information lacks a fully developed comparative structure across the two time periods, resulting in an under-developed overview of the overall transformation of Grange Park.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text shows some organization with paragraphs attempting to separate different areas of the park, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is haphazard, and punctuation errors, such as missing capital letters and periods at the start of sentences like 'in 1920 when we first entered', severely disrupt the flow. Cohesive devices are generally inadequate or inaccurate, with repetitive connectors and unclear referencing, such as 'this has been replaced' and 'latter it was replaced', which makes it difficult to follow the spatial relationships between the past and present layouts. The lack of proper transitional phrases between sentences and paragraphs prevents a smooth reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic changes in the park, such as 'rose garden', 'fountain', 'café', and 'amphitheatre'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, including 'first open' instead of 'first opened', 'relative changes occurred' instead of 'relative changes occurred' or 'significant changes took place', and 'popolar magic games' which is unclear and inappropriate for an academic task. Spelling and word-form errors, such as 'latter' instead of 'later' and 'grance park', occur frequently enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex forms. Frequent errors in punctuation, capitalization, and sentence boundaries—such as run-on sentences and missing terminal punctuation—distract from the text. There are also recurring issues with verb tenses and forms, including 'was first open', 'a fountain was presents', 'today they has been placed', and missing articles like 'there were rose garden'. These frequent errors require the reader to slow down and can cause difficulty in fully understanding the intended meaning of the comparisons.
