IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given layout shows a public park inaugurated in 1920 and the renovated same park at present.

Overall, we can state that the initial floor plan had more open and sparse space compared to today's layout which is more functional and has high-capacity environment.

Initially, it was seen that there was a water fountain in the middle of the park which is later converted into a rose garden. The seat which were located in top and lower left and right corner are now only contempt around the rose garden in the middle of the park. The entrances and the rose garden in the top left corner remained unchanged.

Amphitheatre is build for concerts eliminating the stage for musicians and a sitting area is also included for people to sit around the amphitheatre. A new addition of water feature was made along with that increase in facility of underground parking which will accomodate more Grange park visitors. A new children's play area along with a cafe are also included instead of the pond for water plants.

In conclusion, we can observe that the new floorplan is more functional and utilizes more sparse area in the park.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by covering both the 1920 layout and current plan of Grange Park, providing an overall summary and reporting main features with comparisons. However, some aspects are more fully developed than others. The overview captures the shift toward a more functional space, and key changes such as the replacement of the fountain with a rose garden and the installation of the amphitheatre are identified. Nonetheless, certain details are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the description of seating changes ('now only contempt around the rose garden') is unclear and lacks precision. To reach a higher level, all features should be selected and reported with greater clarity and fully extended support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from introduction to overview, body paragraphs detailing specific spatial transformations, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the park. However, cohesion is at times faulty or mechanical. Words like 'Initially' and 'In conclusion' structure the text, but referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use and the awkward transitional phrasing between sentences. To move to the next band, the flow between sentences and paragraphs needs to be smoother, with more natural and flexible cohesive devices rather than repetitive transitional structures.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the student to describe structural changes such as 'inaugurated', 'renovated', and 'amphitheatre'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'contempt' instead of 'contained' or 'concentrated', 'build' instead of 'built', and 'accomodate' which contains a spelling error. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but minor inaccuracies in word formation and collocation occasionally surface. To achieve a higher band, a wider range of precise lexical items must be utilized with greater accuracy and natural control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and introductory phrases. There are, however, a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasing throughout the text, such as 'the renovated same park', 'The seat which were located', and 'increase in facility of underground parking'. Punctuation and verb tense shifts also show inconsistencies, such as mixing past and present tenses when describing historical versus current features. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from attaining a higher level where error-free complex sentences are more frequent.
