Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the main features of Grange Park in 1920 and today, the information is presented with notable inaccuracies and confusion regarding the locations and changes. For instance, the fountain is described as being 'on the front side of the park' in 1920, and the north-west rose garden is stated to be unchanged while also being mentioned as relocated or altered. Furthermore, there is no clear overview provided to tie the visual data together. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present a clearer overview of the main trends and ensure that all comparisons and descriptions of the map features are factually accurate according to the visual source.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is presented as a single dense paragraph rather than being appropriately divided into an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used in a somewhat repetitive or mechanical manner, with frequent use of 'But' and 'However' to link contrasting points, which disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when discussing the rose gardens on the left and right sides without properly anchoring them to the map's layout. To improve, the writer should structure the response into logical paragraphs and employ a wider, more accurate variety of cohesive ties to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors and inappropriate word choices that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There are several vocabulary inaccuracies and misnamings, such as referring to the park as 'orange park' instead of Grange Park, and describing the water feature as a 'water feature theme park'. Other phrasing, such as 'big hall of rose garden' and 'prime time of the park', sounds unnatural and fails to capture the precise features of the map. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their range of vocabulary, use precise terms relevant to architectural and spatial descriptions, and ensure correct collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns with frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. There are numerous issues with verb forms, tense consistency, and voice, such as 'it has been many changes occurred', 'it is upgrade to an iconic park', and 'the glass house has been changed itno an water feature'. Errors also appear in articles ('an children's play area') and prepositions. Attempts at complex sentences often result in faulty structures and awkward phrasing. To reach the next band, the student needs to develop better control over basic grammatical structures, improve tense usage when comparing past and present states, and reduce the frequency of mechanical errors.
