IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The maps illustrate the changes made to Grange park in Arnold Avenue from when it was first established to how it looks today.
Overall, there have been major changes in the layout of the park's recreational spots. The park now features additional features, including a children's playground, a cafe, and an underground car park. All the other existing features were redeveloped to give a modern outlook.
The rose gardens previously spread out throughout the park was relocated as a big garden placed at the center of the park with seating arrangements surrounding it. The stage for the musicians in the western region of the park was recontructed into an amphitheatre to hold concerts.
Additionally, the pond was filled to construct a children's playground beside which a cafe was built in the northeast section of the park. The glasshouse was removed, and a water feature was built instead beside which was the entrance to the underground car parking area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making clear comparisons between the 1920 layout of Grange Park and its current state. You provided a clear overview that highlights the addition of new recreational spots, such as the cafe and underground car park, alongside the general redevelopment of older areas. Key changes are appropriately reported, such as the transformation of the central fountain into a rose garden and the stage into an amphitheatre. To reach a higher level, you could ensure that every minor detail mentioned is fully precise and expanded with slightly more comparative depth regarding spatial shifts across the entire park.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. The introduction effectively sets the context, followed by an overview paragraph, and subsequent body paragraphs that logically group the modifications made to the park. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', and 'previously spread out', which help guide the reader through the spatial transformations. However, paragraphing could be slightly more refined, and smoother transitions between certain sentences would enhance the overall flow. Maintaining this structured approach while varying cohesive links more flexibly will help elevate the response further.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully employing less common items appropriate for an Academic task, such as 'redeveloped', 'relocated', 'amphitheatre', and 'reconstructed'. There is an awareness of style and collocation in describing map changes. However, there are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice and morphology, such as 'recontructed' (spelling slip) and 'spread out' instead of 'distributed'. To achieve a higher band, continue to integrate sophisticated, precise lexical items consistently and ensure accurate spelling and word formation throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good control of grammar and punctuation, employing a variety of complex structures alongside simple forms. Frequent error-free sentences are evident, and your control over passive structures and relative clauses—such as 'The maps illustrate the changes made to Grange park...' and 'The stage for the musicians... was recontructed'—is generally strong. A few minor errors persist, such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'The rose gardens previously spread out... was relocated'). Maintaining this mix of complex sentence forms while eliminating minor agreement and prepositional slips will ensure even greater grammatical precision.
