Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to compare Grange Park in 1920 and today. While it identifies some major changes, such as the removal of the fountain and the addition of the cafe and children's play area, the overview is rather basic and some details are inaccurate or inadequately presented. For instance, the student states that the stage for musicians was in the east corner when it was actually in the west, and places the pond in the left corner rather than the north-east. The selection of features is limited, and the body paragraphs lack full development and precise reporting of spatial relationships, which prevents the response from moving into higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates some overall organization, dividing the response into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs covering the past and present layouts. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by mechanical and repetitive phrasing, such as starting multiple sentences with 'There were also...'. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inaccurately applied, and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, meaning ideas feel disjointed rather than logically linked throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'amphitheatre' or 'water feature', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and form, including 'grass house' instead of glasshouse, 'fountain' missing an article, and awkward collocations like 'changes are seeing'. Spelling errors and incorrect word forms occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary and demonstrate greater precision in word selection and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that turn out faulty. There are persistent errors in basic grammar, including subject-verb agreement ('This two plans shows', 'there were also a fountain', 'There has been plenty of changes are seeing'), article omission ('removal of fountain', 'in centre of park'), and capitalization. These frequent errors occur across many sentences and can cause difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning remains partially retrievable. Greater control over basic sentence patterns and verb tenses is needed.
