IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagrams display the two blueprints of Grange Park, one from the year 1920 and another from present with some of the major developments. Overall, the park's structure has drastically changed, with major upgrades of previous buildings and new structures have been added by replacing older ones.

Firstly, the fountain located center has replaced with the rose garden. The seats which were at different places are now kept at the all four side of that garden at center. Secondly, the stage for musicians located at west of fountain is now turned into amphitheatre for concerts. The rose garden at the east side of Arnold avenue's entrance is remove completely and there is cafe in that place in the present. Additionally, pond for water plants situated at the north east of the map is replaced with the childern's play area. Furthermore, the water feature has been made to the east of entrance at Eldon street where previously glasshouse was situated, while the rose garden located at west of that entrance has completely removed. Finally, underground car park has been made at the southeast which is clearly visible in the blueprint.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main transformation in the park and make several relevant comparisons, including the central fountain becoming a rose garden, the western stage area becoming an amphitheatre, and the pond and glasshouse being replaced. This gives the reader a generally clear account of change. However, some details are inaccurate or incomplete: the south-west rose garden was removed, but the north-west rose garden remains, so saying the rose garden west of the southern entrance was “completely removed” is too broad. The overview also describes “major upgrades” without clearly summarising the overall pattern of changes. To strengthen the response, distinguish retained features from removed ones and include key changes such as the café and children’s play area alongside the new central seating arrangement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows a broadly logical sequence, moving from the centre to the western and northern areas, then to the south-east. Linking words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Additionally,” and “Finally” help signal the order of points. However, the repeated list-like transitions make the progression somewhat mechanical, and the response is presented as one paragraph rather than separating the overview from the detailed comparisons. Some references are also unclear: “the rose garden located at west of that entrance” could refer to more than one garden. Organise the answer into a distinct overview and one or two detail paragraphs, and group changes by area or by what was retained and replaced. This would make the relationships between features easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “replaced,” “situated,” “located,” and “southeast,” and the reader can generally understand the changes. However, several word choices and collocations are awkward or imprecise, such as “major upgrades of previous buildings,” “turned into,” and “kept at the all four side.” There are also spelling errors in “childern’s” and “cafe” (which should be “café” in this context). Aim for precise map-description language, for example, “was converted into,” “was replaced by,” and “is surrounded by.” A wider range of accurate terms for position and change would make the account more natural and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, using structures such as “where previously glasshouse was situated” and clauses introduced by “while.” However, errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction are frequent enough to make the writing less controlled. For example, “the fountain located center has replaced” needs a passive form and articles (“the fountain in the centre has been replaced”), while “the rose garden … is remove” should be “was removed.” In “with major upgrades … and new structures have been added,” the two parts do not fit grammatically together. Practise accurate passive constructions for map changes and check articles and tense consistency. Clearer sentence boundaries will also help you express comparisons reliably.
