IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The image demonstrates the comparision of a public park from when it was first established in 1920 and today.
Overall, the park has some new added areas like the children's play area, a cafe, an underground car park and a water feature in the eastern side and Amphitheatre for concerts in the western side of the park. All the seats now have been arranged in the central area of the park surrounding the rose garden.
In the past, the fountain took the central area with entrances on both central sides. The rose gardens were seperated into three areas, where the seats were also arranged beside the rose gardens in the western side. And on the eastern side, there was a pond for water plants nd glasshouse on the button east . There were also seats just besides the glasshouse on the right side.
In the present, there is a drastic change in placements of rose gardens and seats while also having some additions of new areas. The stage for musicians on the western side has been replcaed with Amphitheatre for concerts with only one rose garden on the top west side. The rose garden surrounded with 4 seating areas has covered the central area and on the west there a new cafe addeed along with a children's play area in the east and a water feature and a undergroun car park on the button east side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the park gains a café, play area, amphitheatre and water feature, while the central fountain is replaced by a rose garden surrounded by seats. You also compare several former and current locations, including the north-east pond/play area and the western stage/amphitheatre. This covers the task well and shows some of the detail expected in a stronger response. However, a few points are inaccurate or unclear: the café is on the northern edge, not “on the west,” and the central entrances remain rather than being described as changes. The account also omits the north-west rose garden’s unchanged position and the underground car-park entrance. More precise location reporting and a fuller account of what remains would strengthen the overview and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the former and present layouts. This makes the comparison easy to follow in broad terms, and phrases such as “In the past” and “In the present” signal the time contrast. However, some links are mechanical or unclear, particularly repeated use of “and” and “on the … side.” The sentence beginning “The rose gardens were separated into three areas” combines several details without clearly distinguishing their locations, while “In the present” paragraph mixes the café, play area and water feature in a way that makes the café’s position confusing. Grouping features by area and using clearer references such as “by contrast” or “in the north-east” would improve progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant map vocabulary, including “fountain,” “rose gardens,” “pond for water plants,” “stage for musicians” and “amphitheatre for concerts,” so the reader can generally understand the features being compared. There is also some variety in describing change, such as “replaced” and “additions.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “new added areas,” “covered the central area,” and “button east” do not express the intended locations naturally. Spelling errors such as “comparision,” “seperated,” “replcaed” and “addeed” are noticeable. Aim for precise map language and check spelling; for example, use “southern edge” rather than “button east” and “occupies” rather than “has covered.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast between the former and present layouts. The main message is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “All the seats now have been arranged” has an awkward tense construction, and “the rose garden surrounded with 4 seating areas” is missing a suitable passive form (“is surrounded by”). There are also article and sentence-structure problems in “on the west there a new cafe addeed,” as well as inconsistent use of past and present forms when describing the two maps. Use past tense consistently for 1920 and present tense for today, and check sentence completeness, articles and prepositions when describing positions.
