IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the strustural and infrastructural development in the grange park between 1920 and today.
Overall, it is evident that the park experienced a significant social developments. The eastern part of the park experienced the most changes, with a water feature, cafe and a children's play area.
Looking at the details, the stage for musicians was converted into the amphitheatre for concert which is located in the western part of the park. Furthermore, the northwest rose garden remained unchanged, however the fountain in the center of the part was replaced by the rose garden and the seats around it. The southwest rose gaden was demolished, and the northeast one was replaced by a cafe. In addition, the pound for water plants was also conveted into the children's play area, where children can play and enjoy. Lastly, in 1920, there was a glasshouse in the southeast corner, which was demolished and the water feature was created instead of that. The two entrances of the park kept the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation from a formal garden with a central fountain to a park with new recreational facilities, and you compare several locations accurately: the musicians’ stage becomes an amphitheatre, the pond becomes a play area, and the glasshouse site gains a water feature. The overview also highlights substantial change in the eastern section. This covers the task well, but some details are incomplete or imprecise. For example, the café replaces the northern rose garden east of the entrance, while the north-east rose garden is replaced by the play area; your wording about the “northeast one” being replaced by a café blurs these locations. You also omit the underground car-park entrance and do not mention that the central rose garden is surrounded by seats. Clearer location comparisons would make the account more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall shape: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing individual changes. Its sequence is generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “In addition,” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the list-like sequence of changes makes the comparison feel somewhat mechanical, and some connections between locations are not sufficiently clear. In particular, “The southwest rose garden was demolished, and the northeast one was replaced by a cafe” makes it difficult to distinguish the northern garden from the north-east pond and play area. The final sentence about the entrances is relevant but feels appended rather than integrated. Grouping changes by area, and using clearer references such as “the garden in the north-east,” would strengthen progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “amphitheatre,” “rose garden,” “water feature,” and “converted,” so the main changes are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “experienced significant social developments.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural choices reduce accuracy: “strustural,” “gaden,” “pound,” and “conveted” appear in the response, while “social developments” does not accurately describe changes to park facilities. “Demolished” is also less suitable for a garden or pond than wording such as “removed” or “replaced.” Aim for precise map vocabulary and check spelling carefully; this will make your descriptions more natural and reliable without requiring a more elaborate vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the amphitheatre for concert which is located…” and a time clause in “in 1920, there was a glasshouse…”. Most relationships between changes remain understandable. Some grammatical errors are present, however. In “the park experienced a significant social developments,” the article and plural noun do not agree; “the park experienced significant changes” would be more accurate. Other examples include “the amphitheatre for concert” and “the center of the part,” where articles or word forms need attention. The sentence beginning “Furthermore” also joins two contrasting points with “however” without clear punctuation. Continue varying sentence structures, while checking articles, singular/plural forms, and punctuation in longer sentences.
