IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In this we have two different plans for the park named "Grange park"; however, one is for 1920. When it was opened and the second is current map of the park. It is clearly seen that the park is now more developed as compared to the past years. Both the plans have same entrance of Arnold avenue and Eldon street.
In 1920, mostly the area is covered in rose garden and have seats almost on every corner. In addition to it there is a fountain in the center of the park and a stage for musicians. On the right there is a pond for water plants also present. On the other hand we can also see a glasshouse.
Particularly, the newly developed plan have alot of great features. On the left of Arnola entrace we have a rose garden and Amphitheatre for concerts. In the center of park there is a rose garden surrounded by seats. However, on the right side of park there is a cafe, children's play area and a water feature. Considering the plan, we can also see a entrance underground car park. Some significant changes are made as they turned the basic stage with a amphitheatre.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the two time periods and report several relevant changes, including the central fountain becoming a rose garden, the addition of an amphitheatre, and new facilities on the eastern side. However, the overview that the park is “more developed” is broad and does not clearly summarise the main pattern of change. Some locations are also unclear or inaccurate: the café is north of the entrance, not simply on the right, and the amphitheatre occupies the western area, rather than being described as “on the left of Arnold entrance.” The comparison that the stage was turned into an amphitheatre is incomplete because the amphitheatre also replaces the south-west rose garden. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, sensible structure: it introduces the plans, describes the 1920 layout, and then turns to the present-day park. Time markers such as “In 1920” and “On the other hand” help signal the shift between periods. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because locations are described vaguely, for example “On the right” and “on the left of Arnola entrace,” without a consistent orientation. The final sentence repeats the amphitheatre change rather than adding a new comparison. Some linking phrases, including “In addition to it” and “Considering the plan,” feel mechanical or do not clearly connect the ideas. Grouping changes by area and using precise references would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing a park, including “fountain,” “pond for water plants,” “glasshouse,” “rose garden,” and “amphitheatre.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of the features. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or awkward for a map report, such as “more developed,” “great features,” and “on the right side of park.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “Arnola,” “entrace,” and “alot,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more specific terms for location and change, and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help distinguish features that were replaced from those that remained.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentence forms, such as “It is clearly seen that the park is now more developed as compared to the past years,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic sentence construction and agreement: “one is for 1920. When it was opened” is an incomplete sentence, while “the area is covered in rose garden and have seats” has problems with tense, articles, and subject–verb agreement. Articles are also missing or incorrect in phrases such as “a entrance” and “a amphitheatre.” The response relies heavily on simple present-tense statements, with limited variety in structures. Use complete sentences, maintain consistent past and present tenses for the two plans, and check agreement and articles.
