IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The two plans illustrate the differences in the structure of Grange Park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Overall, the layout of the park has changed significantly from when it was first opened in 1920. The current structure have included additional facilities like amphitheatre for concerts, modern water feature and a children's play area and replaced the old facilities like stage for musicians, fountain and glasshouse. Although, it still includes the dual arnold and eldon entrance and the rose garden, on the south side of the arnold entrance, from the old layout.

The old structure included dual entrance from the Arnold Avenue as well as the Eldon street. Two rose gardens were on the west and south side of the arnold entrance. It also had a stage for musicians in front of the south rose garden and a fountain in the centre of the park. A pond for water plants was on the south side of the arnold entrance next to the south rose garden. While, the eldon street had a glasshouse on its south side. Seats were postioned on the sides of the park without a proper plan.

On the other hand, the current layout has replaced the centre fountain with a rose garden. The seats have been properly positioned on the sides of the centred rose garden. The south glasshouse of eldon entrance has been replaced by a modern water feature while the pond for water plants has been replaced by a children's play area. The stage for musicians has also been replaced by a amphitheatre for concerts, meeting the demand of the modern era. The rose garden on the west side of the arnold entrance is still there.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the broad transformation from older features to newer facilities and give an overview, including the replacement of the central fountain by a rose garden and the addition of a play area and amphitheatre. However, several locations are misreported, which makes the account only partly accurate: the pond was in the north-east, not south of the north entrance, and the glasshouse was along the southern edge, not south of Eldon Street. The overview also says the rose garden is south of the Arnold entrance, whereas the surviving garden is in the north-west. Important changes such as the café and underground car-park entrance are omitted. More precise location comparisons and a complete overview of the main changes would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the 1920 plan and then the present layout. This makes the comparison easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” signal the shift between periods. The progression is generally coherent, though some linking is mechanical or awkward: “While, the Eldon street…” is not a complete contrast structure, and “Although” begins a sentence fragment in the overview. References such as “the south rose garden” and “the south side of the Arnold entrance” also make the locations harder to track. Use more precise spatial references and connect related changes directly to improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “layout,” “replaced,” “fountain,” “glasshouse,” and “amphitheatre,” so the main features are usually understandable. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “properly positioned.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural: “dual entrance” does not clearly describe two separate entrances, “in front of” is vague for a map location, and “meeting the demand of the modern era” is an unsupported, awkward addition. “Structure” is also repeated where “layout” or “arrangement” would be more natural. Choose concise map-description language and use accurate directional terms to make the comparisons more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including contrast clauses and relative structures, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, however. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “the current structure have included”; the article is missing in “like amphitheatre”; and “replaced by a amphitheatre” has an incorrect article. The sentence beginning “Although” is incomplete, while “While, the Eldon street…” uses a subordinate conjunction without a properly formed main clause. There are also tense and sentence-boundary issues in the description. Check agreement, articles, and the structure of clauses beginning with “although” or “while”; these corrections would make your varied sentences more controlled.
