IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given presentation is a pair of two maps of a public park which depicts the transformation from its opening year till today.
The observation elucidates the major changes in grange park in which the stage for musicians evolved over the time and location of rose gardnees have been switched and seating arrangements also combined in the middle of the park.
At first, there were three rose garden across the park in which two of them were removed from its location and a one single rose garden in planted in the centre of the park replacing fountain. The pond for aquatic plants is changed into children's play area but another water body is constructed in the bottom right of the park after the removal of glasshouse. A cafe requirement is fullfiled for the visitors on the to right of park.
Focusing on the other side of the park, an amphitheatre is built for big concerts which was previously a gazebo stage for musicians. Althought, the enterances and the rose garden on the top left corner remained exactly the same as in 1920.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify several important changes, including the central fountain being replaced by a rose garden, the pond becoming a children’s play area, and the glasshouse site gaining a water feature. You also note that the north-west rose garden and entrances remain. These details address the task, but some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: the rose gardens were not simply “switched,” and the central garden is surrounded by seats, a major feature you omit. The western change is also described as a stage becoming an amphitheatre, without mentioning that the south-west rose garden was removed. Include a concise overview of the park’s main transformation, then report locations and changes precisely; this would make the account more complete and less ambiguous.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic, useful structure: an introduction, a general statement about change, and paragraphs describing features in different parts of the park. Phrases such as “At first” and “Focusing on the other side” help signal movement through the description. However, the progression is not consistently clear. The second paragraph combines several unrelated changes, while “the other side” does not clearly identify which area is being discussed. Some linking is also awkward, as in “Although, the entrances…”; this does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence. Organise the details by location or by unchanged and changed features, and use clear references such as “in the north-east” or “in the western section” to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “transformation,” “aquatic plants,” “amphitheatre,” and “seating arrangements.” This gives the description some variety, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for a map report. “Gazebo stage” is not supported by the plan, and “a cafe requirement is fulfilled” is an awkward way to report a new facility. There are also spelling errors in “gardnees,” “fullfiled,” and “enterances,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Prefer precise, conventional terms for locations and changes, such as “was replaced by” and “was added.” Check spelling carefully and avoid adding interpretations that the map does not show.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, for example “The pond for aquatic plants is changed into children’s play area but another water body is constructed…” This shows some range, but errors in tense, articles, agreement, and sentence construction make parts of the account difficult to follow. For example, “in which two of them were removed … and a one single rose garden in planted” has faulty clause structure and verb form. “The stage … evolved over the time” also uses an unsuitable tense pattern for describing past and present plans. Use the past simple for the 1920 layout and the present simple for today, and check articles and verb forms. Shorter, accurately controlled comparisons would improve clarity.
