The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The plan depicts the changes of the public park which was opened in 1920 first and today.

Overall, the changes are quite pretty and way more better it was mundane before.

Starting from the entrance ,the park had a glasshouse on its right back in 1920 which is replaced by water feature now. The top right had rose garden and pond for water plants which are rebuilt to cafe and children's play area. The center of the park had a water fountain , but now it's a rose garden with seats all around.

On the left side, both it's top and bottom had rose garden but now top left have one. The park even had a stage specifically for musicians . Later, it was turned into an amphitheatre for concerts. The park has became even more advance by having an underground car park. The has 2 entrances which is the only thing that wasn't changed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the central fountain becoming a rose garden, the western stage area becoming an amphitheatre, and the former glasshouse site becoming a water feature. However, the overview is not an accurate summary: calling the earlier park “mundane” and the changes “pretty” gives an opinion rather than describing the main transformations. Some details are also unclear or inaccurate. The rose garden and pond in the north-east are presented together as if both were replaced by the café and play area, whereas the café replaced a rose garden and the play area replaced the pond. The statement that the park “has 2 entrances” overlooks the new underground car-park entrance. A clearer overview and more precise comparisons would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic structure, with an opening, an overview, and paragraphs describing changes in different parts of the park. Location-based sequencing (“Starting from the entrance” and “On the left side”) helps the reader follow some comparisons. However, progression is uneven: the overview is evaluative rather than informative, and the final paragraph moves from the western features to the car park and entrances without clearly linking these points. Some references are also difficult to interpret, such as “The top right had rose garden and pond,” which combines two separate locations and changes. Use clearer grouping by area and connect each former feature directly to its present replacement; this would make the organisation more coherent and reduce ambiguity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing plans, including “glasshouse,” “water feature,” “rose garden,” and “amphitheatre for concerts.” However, the range is limited and several choices are informal, imprecise, or unnatural for an academic report. “Pretty” and “mundane” express personal judgement rather than map information, while “way more better” is an inaccurate and informal comparison. “Rebuilt” does not clearly describe the replacement of one feature by another, and “advance” is not the appropriate word form or meaning for describing the park. Aim for precise verbs such as “was replaced by,” “was converted into,” and “remained,” and use neutral language throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some longer sentences and contrasts, for example, “The center of the park had a water fountain, but now it's a rose garden with seats all around.” However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between features unclear. Examples include “which was opened in 1920 first,” “top left have one,” and “The park has became,” where word order, subject–verb agreement, and verb forms are faulty. “The has 2 entrances which is the only thing” also contains an incomplete noun phrase and agreement errors. Punctuation is inconsistent, including spaces before commas and contractions that are too informal for this report. Practise accurate past-to-present comparisons and check each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
