The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map depicts grange park located in arnold avenue and eldon street when it opened for the first time and how it looks today.
Overall, There have been major changes throughout the park. The most striking change being at the heart of the park where the fountain has been replaced by a beautiful rose garden which is surrounded by seats for the visitors.
On the west side of the park stage used by musicians has been upgraded into a huge amphitheatre for concerts with a proper main stage and seating arrangement for attendees. On the other hand, the southern east side where glasshouse was located and place of seats right next to it has changed into a water feature. Additionally the park now has a seperate entrance for underground car park area.
The entrance on the north and south of the park has remained unchanged.
Along with that the small rose garden on the left from the arnold avenue entrance is still there but the one on the right has been converted into a cafe. Lastly the pond for water plants no longer exists and is childern's play area now.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You give a clear overview of the main transformation, especially the central fountain becoming a rose garden with surrounding seats, and you compare several important changes accurately: the western stage area becoming an amphitheatre, the former pond becoming a play area, and the glasshouse site becoming a water feature. You also note that the north and south entrances remain. This covers the key features and keeps the response focused on the maps. Some details are less fully reported: the north-west rose garden remains, and the seats around the central garden are described, but the other seating arrangements and the café’s position could be explained more precisely. The phrase “the one on the right” is also less clear than identifying the garden east of the northern entrance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and then descriptions of changes by area, with the entrances and gardens mentioned afterwards. This makes the main comparisons easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “On the other hand,” “Additionally,” and “Lastly” help signal progression, although some transitions feel mechanical, and “On the other hand” does not express a strong contrast between the two locations. The final paragraph combines several separate map features, while the western and southern changes are grouped earlier. A clearer division into paragraphs—overview, then northern/central changes and western/southern changes—would make the organisation more deliberate. Use precise references such as “the north-east corner” rather than “the right” to strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing map changes, including “replaced,” “upgraded,” “surrounded,” and “converted,” and the reader can understand the main transformations. There are also attempts at more specific wording, such as “seating arrangement for attendees.” However, some choices are imprecise or unnatural: “located in Arnold Avenue and Eldon Street” suggests the park is inside the roads, and “southern east side” is not a natural location phrase. “Proper main stage” adds an unsupported judgement, while “beautiful” is subjective rather than suitable for a neutral report. Spelling slips such as “seperate” and “childern’s” also reduce accuracy. Prefer concise, map-focused terms such as “between,” “south-east corner,” and “children’s play area.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including the overview clause “where the fountain has been replaced” and the contrast in “where glasshouse was located … has changed.” Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. The opening sentence lacks capitalisation for “Grange Park,” “Arnold Avenue,” and “Eldon Street,” and “Overall, There” incorrectly capitalises the word after the comma. Articles are missing in phrases such as “where glasshouse was located” and “stage used by musicians.” The sentence beginning “On the west side” also shifts awkwardly from the past location to “has been upgraded,” and “the entrance … has remained unchanged” would be more accurate as plural because there are two entrances. Check articles, tense consistency, and sentence boundaries during revision.
