Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The plan below shows a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today. Now we are going to summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and other comparisons where relevant.

Grange park located in Arnold Avenue has an entrance in Eldon street. In comparison with 1920 today it has an underground car park. Then in today's after entering in there is a rose garden surrounded with seats but in 1920 there was a fountain. There is a water feature excluding glasshouse. At the top of water feature there is a children's play area where there was a water plant in early 1920's.

There is a cafe at the left side of children's play area by finishing the rose garden. In 1920's there was a stage for musicians but now it has been converted into amphitheater for concerts. There is a similarity containing a rose garden at the top of theater and stage in both eras.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify several relevant changes, including the central fountain being replaced by a rose garden with seats, the pond area becoming a children’s play area, and the musicians’ stage being replaced by an amphitheatre. However, the response gives only a minimal account of the plans and lacks a clear overview of the park’s main changes. Some descriptions are inaccurate or unclear: the café is north of the entrance, not clearly “at the left side” of the play area, and the water feature is in the south-east, rather than simply “excluding” the glasshouse. You also omit important features such as the retained north-west rose garden and the underground car-park entrance. The response is 139 words, below the 150-word minimum; develop the comparison with accurate details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The response follows a basic time comparison, moving from the park’s earlier layout to its present features, and phrases such as “In comparison with 1920” and “but now” signal change. However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear, coherent report: there is no distinct overview, and several relationships between locations are difficult to follow. For example, “There is a water feature excluding glasshouse” does not clearly explain what changed, while “There is a similarity containing a rose garden at the top of theater and stage in both eras” is hard to interpret. The opening repeats the task instructions rather than introducing the main pattern. Grouping the changes by area and using clear location references would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing a plan, including “entrance,” “rose garden,” “fountain,” “water feature,” and “amphitheater for concerts.” This gives the reader a basic sense of the park’s facilities and changes. However, the range is limited, and several choices or combinations are imprecise, which makes some details difficult to understand. For instance, “excluding glasshouse” does not express the relationship between the former glasshouse and the current water feature, and “at the left side” is an unclear way to locate the café. “There is a similarity containing” is also an unnatural phrase. Use precise location and change vocabulary, such as “in the south-east corner,” “replaced by,” and “remains unchanged,” to report the map more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a few longer structures, including “where there was a water plant in early 1920’s” and “but now it has been converted into amphitheater for concerts.” These show an effort to compare the two periods, and the basic meaning is often recoverable. However, the range of sentence patterns is limited, and errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms occur frequently enough to make some statements unclear. For example, “Grange park located in Arnold Avenue has an entrance in Eldon street” lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the park and the avenue, while “In comparison with 1920 today it has…” is awkwardly structured. The phrase “There is a similarity containing…” also does not form a clear sentence. Practise concise comparison patterns, such as “The former pond has been replaced by a play area.”
