IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The two maps of GRANGE park illustrates when it was opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Overall, the park has undergone major transformation. Some sites are renovated. For instance water fall, and amphitheatre while others are relocated, like rose garden and seats, and few ones are newly constructed like children's play area.

The former map elaborates the old building styles in which a stage was built for musicians. While seats were arranged near it and in different sites of whole park as well. The fountain was present in middle of park for attraction of visitors. There was also a glass house at the Northeast corner.Three small rose gardens were the part of the park also.

The newly developed park shows how the same building looks differently.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify that the park has changed and mention several relevant features, including the fountain, stage, rose gardens and children’s play area. However, the response only partly fulfils the task: it gives little accurate detail about the present-day layout, and the final sentence merely says the park “looks differently” rather than comparing specific changes. There are also factual errors: the glasshouse was on the southern edge, not in the north-east, and the rose gardens were not relocated as a group. The overview should summarise the main changes, then compare key locations—for example, the central fountain becoming a rose garden and the north-east pond becoming a play area. The response is 114 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph about the earlier plan. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “For instance” signal relationships between ideas. However, there is no clear progression through the comparison: most of the detail concerns 1920, while the present-day plan is left to one vague sentence. Some links are awkward or unclear, such as “Some sites are renovated” followed by a list that mixes changes and new facilities. Develop a consistent structure, such as describing the 1920 layout and then grouping the main changes by area, with clear comparisons between the two maps.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for describing maps, including “fountain,” “stage,” “rose gardens,” “constructed” and “relocated.” This shows an attempt to use a range of terms rather than relying only on basic words. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for this task: “water fall” does not describe the labelled water feature, “old building styles” is not supported by the maps, and “the same building” incorrectly refers to a park. “Renovated” is also not the best description of features that were replaced or added. Aim for precise map language such as “replaced,” “remained,” “was converted into” and “was added,” and check spelling and word forms, including “greenhouse” if you use that term.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “while” clauses and the phrase “like rose garden and seats.” However, errors are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “The two maps … illustrates” has subject–verb disagreement, and “Some sites are renovated” uses an unsuitable tense for describing changes between a past and present plan. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in “in middle of park” and “Three small rose gardens were the part.” Punctuation and spacing need attention, particularly the missing space after “transformation.” Practise accurate past and present forms, agreement, and complete sentences before adding more complex structures.
