Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 2.5
The response makes a relevant opening attempt by identifying a comparison between the park in 1920 and today, and it signals that changes will be discussed. However, it stops after “To begin with the opening year,” so it does not report any actual features or comparisons from either plan, and there is no developed overview. The required minimum length is not met, leaving the task substantially incomplete. To improve, complete the description with the main transformations—for example, the central fountain becoming a rose garden, the western stage area becoming an amphitheatre, and the former pond and glasshouse sites being redeveloped. Include an overview of the park’s major changes as well as specific locations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory sentence is followed by an overall statement, then a transition, “To begin with the opening year,” which suggests a planned sequence. However, the response ends before that sequence develops, so ideas are not arranged into a complete, coherent account and there is no meaningful progression through the two plans. The linking phrase also introduces information that never follows. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and the main details, then group changes by area or by features that were replaced. Ensure each transition leads into a complete sentence and a relevant comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a few task-relevant terms, including “plans,” “public park,” “constructed,” and “present day,” which communicate the general subject. However, the vocabulary range is very limited because the description stops before naming any park features or explaining changes. There are also noticeable spelling errors in “whwn,” “og,” and “chnages,” and “observed a considerable amount of changes” is an awkward collocation. These errors reduce accuracy, although the intended meaning of the opening is still understandable. Proofread carefully and use precise map vocabulary such as “located,” “replaced,” and “redeveloped” when describing the features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The opening includes a simple comparison structure, “The map compares the plans … between 1920 … and today,” and an overview sentence beginning “Overall, it can be seen that…”. These show an attempt to form connected sentences, but the short response provides little evidence of a wider range of structures or sustained accuracy. The phrase “To begin with the opening year,” is an incomplete sentence: it introduces a time reference but has no main clause. In the first sentence, “between 1920 … and today” is also an awkward grammatical construction for comparing two plans. Practise completing each sentence and use a clear pattern such as “The plans show the park in 1920 and today.”
