Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The layout illustrates a comparison of Grange park, how it was built in 1920 and at present. Overall, the park has a significant modification for the public, which have been built with new features. While some area remains the same, and few facility at the park are been removed.

In 1920, the park was built very simple, it included seats and rose garden sorrounding the park at the west-north, north-south and east-south. At the north-east side there was pond for water plants, moving to the centre it had a fountain. While at the western side of the fountain a stage for musicians was constructed and glasshouse wathere at the east-south area, the entrances was located on both the side at north and south, respectively. At the northern side Arnlod Avenue and at the southern Eldon street passed.

At present, the park has more modernized facilities for childeren and public to visit. At east-north area, a cafe and for childrens a play area is been built. At the center, the fountain is removed and instead a rose garden with seats sorrounding is been constructed, and at the west the stage for the musicians is replaced with a huge amphitherature for concerts. The glasshouse which was located at the east-south is removed and water feature is built. The entrance on both the sides from the Arnold and Eldon streets reamin the same, whereas a new entrance is contructed for underground car parking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover both plans and identify several important changes, including the replacement of the central fountain by a rose garden, the new concert amphitheatre, and the conversion of the pond and glasshouse areas. Your overview also recognises that the park has been modernised while some features remain. This gives the response a relevant, clear account of the main transformation. However, the overview is broad, and some details are unclear or incomplete: for example, the north-west rose garden remains, but this is not clearly stated, and the café’s position is described imprecisely. The opening claim that the park was “built very simple” also does not effectively summarise its original layout. A more precise overview contrasting retained features with the main replacements would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for the 1920 plan and the present-day park. This chronological organisation makes the comparison easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “At present,” “instead,” and “whereas” help signal changes. Some connections are less effective, however. The long second paragraph strings together several locations with “While,” “moving to,” and “and,” so the reader has to work to follow the sequence. The overview’s sentence beginning “While some area remains the same” is also an incomplete contrast. Grouping features by area or by what has changed and remained, and using clearer sentence boundaries, would make progression more controlled and cohesion less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing a park plan, including “fountain,” “pond for water plants,” “entrances,” “rose garden,” and “underground car parking.” Terms such as “replaced” and “removed” also help express the changes. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general words such as “built” and “area,” and several choices are unnatural or imprecise: “significant modification for the public,” “modernized facilities,” and “a huge amphitherature.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “sorrounding,” “childeren,” and “Arnlod,” which reduce accuracy. Use more precise plan-description vocabulary, such as “located,” “converted into,” and “amenities,” and check spelling and collocations carefully to make the description more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, and the reader can generally understand the sequence of changes. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “the park has a significant modification,” “which have been built,” and “the entrances was located”; these need more accurate forms and agreement. Several clauses are joined into run-on sentences, such as the description beginning “While at the western side of the fountain,” while “While some area remains the same” is not a complete sentence. There are also errors in phrases such as “the entrance on both the sides … remain the same.” Practise building shorter, complete sentences alongside complex comparisons, and check subject–verb agreement and tense consistency.
