IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagrams illustrate the view of general park. The old design of park in 1920 and the second one is map of nowdays.
Overall, a lot of changes occured except rose garden which is on the north corner.
In 1929, fountain was at the middle of the park and stage for musician was just at the left side of fountain. There were three rose gardens one was at top left side of north, other one was at the lower left side and the third one was at the top right side of the north entrance. There was also a pond for water plants at the north-east corner.
In the present time, a rose garden at the middle of the park and seats for visitors on all directtions and Amphitheatre for concerts is at left side of the rose gardens. While, water pond changes to children play area.
To conclude, there is a cafe and children play area while in 1920 no of them was.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad change from the original park to its present layout and mention several relevant features, including the central fountain, the musicians’ stage, the pond and the current central rose garden. However, the account is only partial: the overview says little beyond the survival of the north-west rose garden, and several important changes are omitted, such as the café, water feature, underground car-park entrance and the removal of the glasshouse. There is also a factual error: the park opened in 1920, not “1929.” The statement that the pond became the children’s play area is accurate, but the comparison would be clearer if you also described the amphitheatre replacing the western facilities and the café replacing a rose garden.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to descriptions of the earlier and current layouts. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “In the present time” signal a change of period. However, progression is uneven: the final paragraph begins “To conclude” but introduces details that would fit better in the main comparison, while the current-layout paragraph covers only a few features. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “While, water pond changes to children play area,” and the repeated use of “one” and “other one” makes the garden locations harder to follow. Grouping changes by area or by what was replaced would create a clearer sequence and stronger connections between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant map vocabulary, including “fountain,” “rose gardens,” “north-east corner” and “Amphitheatre for concerts,” so the reader can identify several features. However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which can make descriptions unclear. For example, “all directtions” is not a natural way to describe seats surrounding the garden, and “water pond” is imprecise. Spelling errors such as “occured” and “nowdays” are also noticeable. Aim to use precise location and change vocabulary consistently, such as “to the west of,” “in the south-east corner,” “was replaced by” and “remains unchanged.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, but grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between features difficult to understand. The opening, “This diagrams illustrate,” has disagreement, while “the old design of park” is missing an article. Tense and sentence construction also need attention: “In the present time, a rose garden at the middle” lacks a finite verb, and “While, water pond changes to children play area” is an incomplete clause. Articles, plurals and prepositions are often missing or inaccurate, as in “at left side” and “no of them was.” Use complete sentences with a consistent past tense for 1920 and present tense for today, checking subject–verb agreement and articles.
