IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The shown picture gives information on changes of Grange Park between first opened day and today in Arnold Avenue, Eldon Street. There is no difference in whole size and some changes in organization of the park.

One of the Rose garden remained same and the other one is moved to the directly opposite. Front and back entrances are not changed, but there is an new entrance in underground car parking. There was a fountain in the center of the park in 1920 and stage for musicians was behind that fountain. However, there is a bigger rose garden in the center now and seats are placing around that. The water feature is placed instead of Glasshouse and Amphitheatre for concerts are replaced some seats and Stage for musicians. Also, pond for water plants was placing the right corner of the park and it is replaced by children's play area now. Moreover, cafe is a new here and there was a rose garden before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the central fountain being replaced by a rose garden, the pond becoming a children’s play area, and the glasshouse site becoming a water feature. You also note that the entrances on the two streets remain and that a café is new. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: the south-west rose garden was replaced by the amphitheatre, not “moved to the directly opposite,” and the amphitheatre did not replace seats. The overview is also limited to the park’s size and general reorganisation, rather than clearly summarising the main pattern of change. Include the café and play area alongside the major central and western changes, and describe locations precisely to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence, moving from general changes to entrances and then to individual features. Linking words such as “However” and “Moreover” help signal contrast and addition. Nevertheless, the ideas are presented in one continuous paragraph, and the progression between locations is not always clear. For example, the sentence beginning “The water feature…” combines the south-east change with the amphitheatre’s western location, making the comparison difficult to follow. Some references, such as “the other one” and “that fountain,” also require the reader to infer which feature is meant. Group the information into an overview and a paragraph comparing the main areas, and use clear location-based references to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “fountain,” “stage for musicians,” “pond for water plants,” “entrance,” and “children’s play area,” so the reader can identify many of the features. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “replaced” and “opposite.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “changes … between first opened day,” “organization of the park,” and “a new here” do not express the intended meaning naturally. “Behind that fountain” is also imprecise for describing a map position. Use standard phrases such as “when it first opened,” “layout,” and “to the west of,” and distinguish clearly between features that were replaced and those that remained.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of sentence forms, including contrasts with “However” and a relative clause in “where the glasshouse was in 1920.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur frequently in articles, verb forms, agreement, and sentence construction. Examples include “between first opened day and today,” “there is an new entrance,” “seats are placing around that,” and “pond … was placing.” The sentence “Amphitheatre for concerts are replaced some seats and Stage for musicians” has problems with agreement and clause structure that obscure the comparison. Practise accurate past and present passive forms, such as “was replaced by” and “is surrounded by,” and check articles and singular/plural agreement. Shorter, well-controlled sentences would make the map changes clearer.
