The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

This plan describes a public park that was initially started in 1920, with a similar park right now.

The overall park has undergone many upgrades in park during the period from 1920 to today, such as the seats have been removed and pond for water plants become advance and modern. Also, the rose garden has been reduced or replaced.

The seats have been reduced to four in the park as well it also replace and positioned to the middle of park. The rose garden has also been reduced to two; one is in the middle of the park, and the other is at the same location. Entrances have not been changed, but there is an underground car park near the water feature.

The glass house has been replaced with a water feature; the fountain has been removed and replaced with a rose garden. There is a new cafe build which added against on rose garden, there is a new place for children's play area replaced from pond for water plants. The stage for musicians has been removed, and a new area called an amphitheatre has been constructed for concerts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify several important changes, including the replacement of the pond by a children’s play area, the glasshouse by a water feature, and the musicians’ stage by an amphitheatre. However, the overview is unclear and includes inaccurate claims: seats were not removed but rearranged around the central rose garden, and the pond did not become “advance and modern.” The statement that there are only two rose gardens is also misleading: the north-west garden remains, while the central garden is new and the northern garden has been replaced by a café. The response reports individual changes but does not clearly summarise the park’s main transformation. A more accurate overview and clearer comparisons between the two plans would strengthen coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, an attempted overview, and a paragraph listing changes. This gives the reader some structure, and phrases such as “The glass house has been replaced” help connect related information. However, progression is not consistently clear. The overview repeats or conflicts with later details, and the final paragraph moves rapidly between features without grouping them by location or type of change. Linking phrases such as “as well it also” and “There is a new…” are awkward or repetitive, while references such as “the other is at the same location” do not make clear which garden is meant. Organise the details into clear comparisons—for example, northern, central, and western changes—and use precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant map vocabulary, including “entrances,” “fountain,” “water feature,” “amphitheatre,” and “children’s play area,” so the reader can identify many of the features. There are also attempts to describe change with “replaced” and “constructed.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or vague: “upgrades in park,” “become advance and modern,” and “a new cafe build” do not express the intended changes naturally. “Reduced” is also misleading for the seats and rose gardens, which were rearranged or replaced rather than simply reduced. Spelling and form need attention, including “glass house” and “cafe.” Build a more precise set of verbs for map comparisons, such as “relocated,” “retained,” and “converted into.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the basic meaning of many changes can be understood. However, control is uneven, and attempts to combine ideas often produce faulty structures. For example, “The seats have been reduced to four in the park as well it also replace” lacks a clear grammatical connection and has an incorrect verb form. In “the pond for water plants become,” the verb form is missing the appropriate tense, while “there is a new cafe build” uses an incorrect construction. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “in middle of park” and “added against on rose garden.” Use past simple or present perfect consistently to describe changes, and check each sentence for a complete clause, correct verb form, and necessary articles.
