IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The plans below show a public park when it first opened in 1920 and the same park today.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two maps illustrate the changes tha have taken place in Grange Park since ir first opened in 1920.
Overall the park is gone through significant redevelopment, with several original features being transformed into new features, while some features being renovated into better version. However some places over there remain the same as before .
Firstly major changes include removing the old fountain from center into rose garden with seats around it, while also making a water feature at the bottom right of the park, but for that they had to remove glasshouse completely, also all the seats around the entire park is been removed and added other new features instead of them like, stage for musician is been transformed into a whole amphitheatre for concerts. Also removing one rose garden and pond for water plants from before in 1920 to adding there a cafe and children's play area.
Lastly there were three rose garden at the start one in each corner before to having just two now one in center and second in the same posiotion at it was before. At the end there is a underground entrance for car park installed as off today.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main transformation clearly: the central fountain becomes a rose garden with surrounding seats, and the western stage area becomes an amphitheatre. You also cover several changes at the edges, including the café, play area, water feature and underground car-park entrance. This gives a relevant account of both plans and a useful overall summary. To make the overview more complete and precise, distinguish features that remain from those that disappear: the north-west rose garden and the central street entrances are retained, while the other two original rose gardens are removed. The statement that all seats around the park were removed is inaccurate; seats remain around the central garden and elsewhere. Some comparisons are compressed or unclear, so more exact location-based reporting would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and two body paragraphs. The sequence from general changes to specific features is broadly logical, and words such as “Overall,” “Firstly” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the body paragraphs contain several changes in long, loosely connected sentences, making relationships between features harder to follow. For example, the sentence beginning “Firstly major changes include…” combines the central garden, water feature, glasshouse, seats and amphitheatre. Grouping changes by area—north, centre and south—or by what was replaced would make the account easier to navigate. Some linking phrases, such as “but for that,” do not clearly express the relationship intended, and “there” and “over there” are imprecise references.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the plans, including “redevelopment,” “transformed,” “amphitheatre,” “pond” and “underground entrance.” These choices communicate the main changes, and you attempt some less common terms. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or informal for a map description: “better version,” “bottom right,” “gone through” and “installed as off today” are not natural or precise in this context. Spelling errors such as “posiotion” and “tha” also reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent location language such as “south-east corner” and verbs such as “was replaced by” or “was converted into.” This would make your descriptions more precise while retaining your current range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “while” and “although,” but control is uneven. Errors in verb forms and sentence construction are evident in “the park is gone through significant redevelopment,” “all the seats … is been removed,” and “stage for musician is been transformed.” These should use appropriate past or present-perfect forms and subject–verb agreement. The phrase “there were three rose garden … before to having just two” also shows problems with plural forms and clause structure. Several sentences run together or rely on incomplete constructions, particularly the long sentence beginning “Firstly major changes include.” Use shorter, complete sentences and check tense, agreement, articles and plurals; this will improve clarity without requiring more complicated structures.
