IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
some people think that they should study other courses as well in addition to their main subject because it provides more important information about other fields as well and open the open they most vast opportunities for the for the students in terms of career and also while some other students sent at they should not do that and they should only focus on their qualification and I don't think so that this is what we should do I think we should also explore other like personally I have been student of biology biological sciences but instead has studied in other courses like a i and business intelligence and all and I have a lot of money from these courses and also available to learn about how the world is progress and how a i is waiting in our daily life so I personally think that we should focus on other things is well instead of sticking to one subject or qualification and regarding courses you should explore and that will also make us more intelligent and and just make a thing broadly about so many other fields so we should do that but if someone is having a low ikeward doesn't like sticking to so many different fields and they should definitely focus on one subject that is gonna provide them the qualification degree so I think that both things work effectively depending on the situation and all

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views and state a personal preference for exploring subjects beyond a main qualification. Your biology background and study of AI and business intelligence provide a relevant example, and you acknowledge that focusing on one subject may suit some students. However, the discussion is only partial: the benefits of concentrating on a qualification are mentioned briefly, without explaining them, and the advantages of broader study are asserted more than developed. The position also becomes less definite at the end, where you say both approaches work depending on the situation. The response is 11 words below the required minimum, which further limits the space available to develop the ideas. Explain both sides more fully and make your final opinion consistent and clear.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response contains a recognisable line of thought: it introduces the two views, gives your preference and personal example, then briefly qualifies that preference. However, ideas are not arranged into clear paragraphs, and almost the entire answer is one long sentence. This makes it difficult to distinguish the discussion of each view from your example and conclusion. Linking words such as “because,” “also,” and “but” appear, but they do not create a clear progression; repeated “and” connections often leave relationships between ideas unclear. Organise the response into an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Use a smaller number of precise linking phrases and clear sentence boundaries to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “career,” “biological sciences,” and “business intelligence,” and the personal example helps convey your meaning. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “other things,” “other fields,” and “make us more intelligent.” Phrases including “open the open they most vast opportunities” and “how AI is waiting in our daily life” are difficult to understand because the word choices and combinations are inaccurate. Aim for more precise academic expressions, such as describing how interdisciplinary study broadens career prospects or helps students understand technology’s role in everyday life. Check collocations and word forms carefully so your ideas are easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas using subordinate clauses and contrast, for example with “because” and “but,” but the response relies heavily on a single extended sentence. This creates frequent problems with sentence boundaries, punctuation, and clause structure, making some relationships difficult to follow. There are also errors in agreement and verb forms, as in “it provides … and open,” and the opening phrase “some people think that they should” is not clearly connected to the later clauses. Use shorter, complete sentences and practise combining them with controlled complex structures. Check that subjects and verbs agree, and use full stops to separate the main points. More accurate sentence construction would make your argument substantially clearer.
