IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that students should allow to learn about extra subjects in addition to their main field of acedemic. However, others argue that total prioritization to studying for a qualification is more important. In my opinion i think that studying extra subjects are more beneficial as a future prospect..

One major advantage of studying extra subject is that it may helps to develop wide range of skills in the students. This is because exposure to different kinds of fields can gain experinces in the different fields. As a result, Students would have the adpatability for different career path rather than restricting in one career path. For example, agriculture graduates usually have better adaptability to different carrer paths because of their course curriculam often provide wide range of subjects. Ultimately, this better adatability is beneficial in maintaining their job security. Furthermore, allowing students to learn about the other subjects may reduce the academic stress. This is because trapping to a single subject some times can be stressfull. Therefore other subjects such as arts, dancing can potentially use as a relaxing material for students. For instance, Science undergraduates can relax their minds by following subjects like Arts or Music.

However, some argue that full time prioritazion to particullar subject is more important than studying mixture of subjects. One major advantage of focusing full time to studying for a qulification is that it helps to develop better understanding about the subjects and student would have better experience to the subject field. As a result It would make a professional in the particular carrer path. It is very beneficial for competitive job market at the present.

In conclusion, although giving all their focus to studying for a qualification can create a professional with better experince, I believe that following extra subjects are more valuable as a future prospect.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a consistent preference for learning additional subjects. The first main paragraph gives relevant reasons—adaptability across careers and relief from academic stress—and the agriculture and arts/music examples help illustrate them. You also explain the opposing view by linking focused study with deeper subject knowledge and professional preparation. This covers the task well, but the two sides are not developed equally: the case for concentrating on a qualification is brief and has no specific example, while some claims, such as agriculture graduates’ adaptability, need clearer explanation. To strengthen the response, extend that counterargument and support both positions with more precise examples, while explaining why your preferred view is more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting additional subjects, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “However,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” makes the direction of the argument easy to follow. Within paragraphs, you generally move from a claim to an explanation and then an example. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “As a result” introduces consequences that are not fully established, and “Ultimately” repeats the preceding point rather than advancing it. The second viewpoint also feels comparatively abrupt. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing the actual relationship between ideas; develop the opposing paragraph so the progression feels balanced.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “qualification,” “adaptability,” “academic stress,” and “competitive job market,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “future prospect” and “professional.” However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “acedemic,” “experinces,” “adpatability,” and “full time prioritazion” are examples. Some combinations are unnatural, including “relaxing material” and “better experience to the subject field.” Aim for accurate, natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing vague phrases with precise expressions—for example, describing transferable skills or subject expertise—would make the argument clearer and more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and result clauses beginning “As a result.” Most ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “studying extra subjects are more beneficial” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “it may helps” combines incompatible verb forms. In “exposure to different kinds of fields can gain experiences,” the grammatical subject does not perform the stated action. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “In my opinion i think” and the double full stop in the introduction. Practise checking each sentence’s subject and verb, and revise complex clauses to ensure their relationships are grammatically clear.
