IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The students these days have the hunger of gaining the skills in various fields rather than being limited to the particular subject. On the contrary, some believe that it is crucial to focus on particular subject for qualification. Both views have their own pros and cons and have good weight of reasons on their sides. As the old saying says, "Jack of all trades, master of none", being well qualified and skilled in a specific subject gives good foundation and great knowledge of the particular field. However, the present competitive scenario of the ever changing world tends to agree with the students who want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subject. It is important for better learning and for grabbing great opportunities.
It is very important for students to master in the main subjects. However, it is equally crucial to learn about other subjects as one subject is related to another and eventually helps in learning effectively. For instance, while I was studing physics in master level, one of our teachers offered to teach python programming language free of cost after the regular classes. We joined his class during our free time and to our surprise, learning the python helped us alot during our thesis work of masters in physics. We simply utilised the time which we might had wasted in college canteen. So, with time management and hunger for learning, it is not very hard to learn some new subjects. This enriches our knowledge and makes us more confident in life.
Another significance of learning extra subjects is the opportunity that we get. Knowledge in various fields makes us eligible for vital posts and attractive income. For example, a science teacher with the knowledge of science is great but a science teacher who can lead in both science and technology is definitely a winner. Moreover, for teaching, a good command in language in needed. Thus, the subjects are interrelated to eachother.
In the nutshell, the significance of being the master of one subject is huge. However, learning about other subjects in addition to main subjects is definitely a plus point as it provides better learning and better opportunities in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear preference for learning additional subjects, especially in the introduction and conclusion. The examples from your physics studies and the science teacher help make the benefits relevant and concrete. However, the qualification-focused view receives much less development: the saying “Jack of all trades, master of none” hints at a concern about specialisation, but you do not explain in detail why concentrating fully on a qualification may be valuable, such as building expertise or meeting professional requirements. Some claims about “vital posts and attractive income” are also broad and would benefit from explanation or a more specific example. Develop both sides more evenly and make the reasoning behind your position more explicit.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs focused on the benefits of additional learning, and a concluding summary. Examples generally follow the points they support, and linking expressions such as “However,” “For instance,” and “Moreover” help guide the reader. The main limitation is that the two body paragraphs both argue for learning extra subjects, so the opposing view is not given its own clear place in the progression. Some connections are also mechanical or unclear, particularly “Thus, the subjects are interrelated to eachother,” which does not fully explain how the preceding example supports the point. Organise the discussion into distinct paragraphs for each view, then connect them to your opinion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “competitive scenario,” “foundation,” “interrelated,” and “time management.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the response remains understandable. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural collocations and word forms, such as “hunger of gaining,” “good weight of reasons,” “master in the main subjects,” and “a good command in language.” “Attractive income” is also less natural in this context. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common academic collocations and check whether each phrase sounds idiomatic in context; for example, use “desire to acquire skills” and “master the main subjects.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses and contrast structures, as in “However, it is equally crucial to learn about other subjects as one subject is related to another.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and punctuation generally supports readability. Some grammatical errors remain, including “one of our teachers offered to teach” followed by “We joined his class” where the time reference would be clearer with consistent past-tense phrasing, and “which we might had wasted,” which should use “might have wasted.” There are also article and agreement problems in “a good command in language in needed.” Review modal verb patterns, articles, and subject–verb agreement, then proofread for these recurring sentence-level issues.
