Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is believed by some people that university students should study more subjects as well as their main subjects. However, others oppose this idea and mentioned students should focus on mainly on important courses of their degree. This essay will discuss both group's opinion and reason for their response and my opinion as well.
On one hand if university students will learn extra subjects in university they can gain more knowledge. For example, if one students is learning about biology to become a doctor in future and will also take Yoga or Physical education as other additional subject he can not only work on his health but can also tell other about its benefit and can even increases his social circle. Furthermore, if student learn more subjects it is highly possible that he can neglect the main courses. As a result, it can lead to failure in their main subjects.
On the other hand, to support the second group there are also several reasons. Firstly, If a student focus solely on main subjects he can improve his scores and can know more about them. With good scores he can be selected in job with top position. Moreover, learning extra subjects also cost extra money which for some families will be difficult to pay. Hence, it could also effect their main subjects qualification in case if their can not pay the required funds.
In my opinion, it should be students choice if they wants to learn extra things or activities while studying main areas of their education. No one should force or implement any kinds of rules on them as it should be their own personnel choice.
In conclusion, although both groups have valid points in their areas but it should be learners own choice if they wants to learn new subjects or no.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding financial costs is introduced but not fully explored in relation to the main topic of academic breadth. While the response covers all parts of the prompt, the supporting points could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a functional level rather than a fully developed one.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing (e.g., 'both group's opinion' should be 'both groups' opinions'). Paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear, though the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a more natural, sophisticated feel.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'qualification', 'main subjects', and 'social circle'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some word-choice errors, such as 'implement any kinds of rules' instead of 'impose' or 'enforce'. The repetition of basic terms like 'subjects' and 'learn' suggests a need for a wider variety of synonyms to demonstrate more flexibility and precision in academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'if one students is learning', 'if student learn') and article usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors that occasionally interrupt the flow. To improve, the student should focus on ensuring consistency in verb tenses and pluralization, as these errors are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching the 7.0 band.
