IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the upcoming era, people believe that living on the Earth requires extra effort, so the government should invest in searching for a new planet. However, I completely disagree with this statement because spending money on finding another planet is worthless. Instead, people and the authorities should invest in the Earth, which could be more meaningful.

To commence with, space companies want to hike their value, and they are also trying to innovate by investing money in these types of projects because these kinds of rumours only try to sell dreams. It is not possible to transport all people to another planet. For instance, over the last decade, Elon Musk has tried to make people believe possible rumours about Mars and space. As a result, people know about these strategies and have also lost faith in the public.

In addition, the environment could be damaged by humans who are sitting in reputed positions, and they should try to clean the Earth because unnecessary plants are not the main reason; the main reason is deforestation. For example, it is possible to clean the atmosphere and create an enjoyable environment for all species. Although all remedies are available on the Earth, strict dedication to work is needed.

In conclusion, it is unnecessary to find another planet, but improving environmental issues and providing equality of life for all species is crucial. Besides, I strongly disagree with this statement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on university students learning additional subjects versus focusing solely on their main qualification. However, your essay discusses the merits of space exploration versus environmental protection on Earth. Because you have failed to address the task prompt entirely, the score for Task Achievement is significantly impacted. Additionally, the essay is under the 250-word minimum requirement, which further limits the development of any relevant ideas. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt and ensure your arguments directly relate to the specific question asked.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Despite the essay being off-topic, the structure is logical. You have used paragraphing appropriately to separate your introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. There is a clear progression of ideas within the context of your chosen (albeit incorrect) topic. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' to link your points. However, because the content does not relate to the prompt, the overall coherence is undermined. To reach a higher band, ensure that your logical flow supports a relevant argument that directly answers the specific question provided in the task instructions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'innovate', 'reputed', and 'dedication'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'rumours only try to sell dreams' or 'unnecessary plants', which affect the precision of your expression. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and expanding your range of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'lost faith in the public' (which is unclear in context) and 'people believe possible rumours'. While these errors do not generally impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You have a basic grasp of sentence construction, but you need to work on the accuracy of your complex sentences and ensure that your grammar supports the clarity of your arguments. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
