IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In my opinion, the students should mainly focus on their main subjects and should have a option for studying an additional subject.
University students should focus on their main subjects, the sole reason for this is that there is huge competition and not giving proper time to the subjects results in life tie failure. To give you an example as a Computer Science student when i started my university, i used to take interest in all kinds of things such as joining societies and also participating in other optional subjects which limited my time and focus on my studies, and resulted in poor grade and no proper knowledge for future subjects.I started to find the core subjects difficult.
On the other hand my friends who only focused on their core subjects and didn't wasted their in time on non relevant subjects ultimately scored a higher grade and also got their jobs early.Their basics were clearer as they didn't wasted their time as i did. They also selected some additional subjects but only which really mattered or were really helpful
in future competition and qualification. One should properly check which subjects are really important for the long term goal so they could identify and choose only those additional subjects which are needed rather than wasting time.
In conclusion the university should provide guidance and option for the students to opt for the irrelevant subjects and the students should only focus on their core subjects so they could qualify and compete in the world.Additional and Irrelevant subjects only result in the waste of time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide a personal example regarding Computer Science, the discussion of the opposing view (students taking additional subjects) is slightly repetitive and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that you fully explore the benefits of studying additional subjects rather than just focusing on the potential for 'wasting time.' The conclusion is clear, but the argument could be more balanced to better reflect the complexity of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion,' to link your thoughts. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes repetitive or mechanical. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between your personal experience and the general argument could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. However, there is a reliance on basic vocabulary and some repetitive phrasing, such as 'main subjects' and 'wasting time.' There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'life tie failure' (likely meaning 'lifelong failure') and 'irrelevant subjects.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the students should mainly focus'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'didn't wasted' instead of 'didn't waste'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage and spacing after punctuation marks. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity and professionalism of your writing.
