Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some university students would like to learn about more subjects instead of their main subjects. Others believe that it is more important to give your all time and attentions to important subjects for the sake of better grades.

On the one hand, some students in the university would like to read history, geography and other non compulsory subjects, because these subjects matches their interests very well and they find it too convenient to read all these subjects. Some find these science subjects boring because they find these subjects difficult.

On the other hand, other students in the university like to read the difficult subjects like science subjects, because they want to explore something thing new through scientific innovations, therefore they find these subjects helpful according to their taste of interests. I know about my cousin who takes a lot of interests in science subjects, furthermore at the same time he also ignores other non compulsory subjects. When he was in his final year of study, he published an article in an international journal which is related to his own choice. In addition to, he has also received scholarship from NIHS Lahore.

In my opinion, I also agree with the second statement, its very important to pay all your attentions to your studies and give your leisure time to studies as well for better qualification. Non compulsory subjects are the general requirement of the education system. Students should pass all these subjects but pay more attention to compulsory subjects.

In a nutshell, different students have different tastes regarding to their subject selection methods. Some like to read simple and easy subjects while other like to read difficult subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. The discussion of why students might want to study additional subjects is vague, and the explanation of the cousin's experience is slightly disjointed from the main argument about balancing subjects. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that your supporting examples are more directly linked to the prompt's core question regarding the trade-off between breadth and depth in university education. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In a nutshell'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as 'In addition to, he has also received...'. Additionally, the progression of ideas within paragraphs could be smoother; for instance, the transition between the cousin's academic success and the general argument about compulsory subjects is abrupt. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'read subjects' (instead of 'study' or 'pursue') and 'simple and easy subjects'. There are also some awkward collocations like 'give your all time and attentions' and 'taste of interests'. While the meaning is clear, the lack of more sophisticated academic vocabulary limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to higher education, such as 'academic curriculum', 'specialization', or 'interdisciplinary studies'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'these subjects matches' (subject-verb agreement), 'something thing new' (repetition/typo), and 'regarding to' (incorrect preposition). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
