IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, pursuing education after high school graduation has become a standard and a choice made buy numerous people across the world. This increase in university students came along with a growing number of subjects and career options available for new learners. While some argue that focusing on a selected field and allocating all the time and efforts to it is the best approach others believe that with the new opportunities it is also possible to learn about other different subjects and topic.
As far as I am concerned I truly believe that the benefits of a more restricted but detailed study field outweigh the advantages of learning about multiple topics.
In fact, it is undeniable that learning new subject could be dramatically important and life changing. For instance, learning new subjects could lead to a broader overall knowledge. Thus, increasing career opportunities and chances. What is more, learning about new rising fields and practicing them could lead to serious advancement in them and advantageous positioning in their future development. This proved to be true with numerous recent examples such as the arriving of the AI industry or the use of crypto currencies.
However, considering only this perspective may overlook other important factors and lead to an incomplete understanding of the broader issue. As a matter of fact, a surface knowledge of different topics and fields may not be of great help in comparison to a detailed and sharper one. Mastering a subject and clearly understanding it could favor more long lasting work opportunities as most of today's work force is depending on expert people in their field. For example, general knowledge about medicine could be helpful dealing with every day's life situation. However a complete understanding and dedication to it followed with a recognition of it from a highly recognized institution such as with a diploma. Could lead to a life practice of it which similarly could happen with other fields.
To conclude, even though studying and learning about new topics rather than solely focusing on one seemed at first to have some advantages. It showed to lack impacting drawbacks which was not the case of the latter option.

|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of AI and cryptocurrency to support the benefits of broad knowledge, and the argument for specialization in the workforce. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The explanation of why specialization is superior could be more robust, particularly in the third paragraph where the example of medicine is slightly confusing and lacks clarity. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained and linked back to the main argument more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In fact', 'However', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or the connection between sentences is weak, such as in the final paragraph where the concluding thought feels abrupt and slightly disjointed. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally unclear, which slightly impacts the overall progression of ideas. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatically important', 'advantageous positioning', and 'work force'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'arriving of the AI industry' (should be 'emergence') and 'every day's life situation' (should be 'everyday life'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and precise terminology would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('most of today's work force is depending' should be 'depends'), punctuation errors (the sentence fragment 'Could lead to a life practice of it...'), and minor spelling mistakes like 'buy' instead of 'by'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences and proofreading for basic grammatical slips would significantly improve the score.
