IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Many people believe that university students should study the subjects other than their main field, while others think that students should focus on their major subjects. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that learning a few additional subjects is more beneficial.
On the one hand, concentrating only on the main subject helps students achieve better academic results. University courses are often difficult and require a great deal of time and effort. If students divide their attention between different subjects, they are more likely to lose in their major subjects. For instance, Medical and engineering students have heavy workloads and need to focus on their major subjects. They need to spend many time on attending lectures, completing assignments and presentation. Therefore, giving full-time attention to their major subjects can improve their knowledge and future career opportunities.
On the other hand, learning other subjects can help students to develop a wider range of skills. Subjects such as communication, business or computer science can be useful in many professions. In addition, studying different fields encourages creativity and critical thinking. For instance, business student who learns basic information technology may have better job opportunities after graduation because many companies value employes with different skills.
In my opinion, students should mainly focus on their major subjects, but they should also study a small number of additional subjects in their free time. This balanced approach allows them to gain knowledge while improving other important skilss.
In conclusion, although focusing on one subject is important for academic success, learning other subjects can provide a variety of knowledge and make students more confident and competitive in the job market as well as in their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the task. You have discussed both views and provided a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the argument regarding the heavy workload of medical students versus the benefits of interdisciplinary skills. However, the development could be slightly more sophisticated; for instance, the example of the business student learning IT is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are fully explored to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the implications of each viewpoint. Overall, the position is consistent and the task is fully addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Therefore' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. For example, the shift between the two main body paragraphs is clear, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph could be enhanced by using more diverse linking words to connect the benefits of creativity and employability.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'interdisciplinary skills', 'academic success', and 'competitive in the job market' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'lose in their major subjects' (should be 'lose focus' or 'fall behind') and 'employes' (spelling error). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good, but there is room to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions to elevate the tone. The vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'spend many time' (should be 'spend much time' or 'spend a lot of time') and 'business student' (should be 'a business student'). Additionally, there is a minor typo: 'skilss'. While these errors are present, they are not frequent enough to impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are the primary areas where minor errors occur.
