IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few university students consider learning about other courses instead of learning their own course . Other hand some students think that it is more crucial to study their own major rather than studying different course which is nit even related to their major. This has become a very heated topic in this contemporary society . Should students spent their time learning about own major or they should study other subjects this will be discussed in essay .

So most students are smart and intelligent . They are very good in studies . They do not procrastinate when it comes to study . When they have finished their course and they have nothing else to do they start to study other subjects rather then studying their own course this is a bold decision instead of wasting their time own other rubbish activities they decide to study . These students have time and they had already completed their academic study that is why they are able to study other subjects .

On the hand there are some students who are diligent in study however they are still behind in their studies and even if they are not they still think that studying other subjects in addition to their main subject is just a waste of time . Students believe that we can put our effort and time in their major subjects and can get great grades.

My perspective is students should study their own major rather than any other subject .Even a minor distraction is very harmful for student . By studying their own major in future they will be several beneficial consequences .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack specific, concrete examples to support the claims. For instance, the discussion on why students might choose to study other subjects is vague, and the reasoning for your own position is underdeveloped. To improve, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' of your arguments, providing real-world examples or hypothetical scenarios to illustrate your points more effectively. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is insufficient for a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression between and within them is weak. While you use some linking words like 'On the hand' and 'However', the flow is often interrupted by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow your line of reasoning. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that directly relates to the prompt.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally basic and repetitive. You rely on simple words like 'study', 'subjects', and 'good', which limits your ability to express complex ideas precisely. There are also some instances of awkward word choices, such as 'rubbish activities' and 'several beneficial consequences', which sound unnatural in an academic context. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms. Focus on using precise terminology related to education and academic performance to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('study their own course'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward sentence construction ('Other hand some students think'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent and distract the reader. There is a limited range of complex structures, and the ones attempted often contain errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence patterns, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for common errors like missing words or incorrect verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
