Student answer (Band 6.5)
Opinions remain divided on the issue of whether students should acquire knowledge in additional subjects or they should contribute their time and attention to master a particular qualification. This essay will examine both perspectives before presenting my own viewpoint.
Proponents of this viewpoint argue that they want acquire knowledge in the minor subjects besides their major's. This is approach is considered beneficial because learners can develop interest in various distinct sectors. For instance, learning chemical engineering subjects can be beneficial for a computer science engineering student in aspects such as it can help students to understand the radioactivation decay after the use smartphones. Consequently, interlinking various subject broaden one's horizons which might help them in future as the trend in working sector considerably differs.
On the other hand, many students contend that it is essential to cultivate their time and attention to master a qualification as it. As a result, it will facilitate academic excellence for scholars. Personally, I am firmly convinced that it is crucial for students to gain knowledge in various sectors. This viewpoint is more convincing for several reasons. The most compelling is that it broaden one's horizons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both perspectives and providing a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The example regarding chemical engineering and smartphone decay is quite obscure and not fully explained, which weakens the argument. Similarly, the conclusion is underdeveloped and lacks a clear summary of the main points, ending abruptly. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments would benefit from more depth and clearer logical links to the main topic of university education.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Consequently', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the sentence 'As a result, it will facilitate academic excellence for scholars' which follows a fragmented sentence. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences in the third paragraph is slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors, which occasionally disrupts the smooth progression of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more academic language like 'proponents', 'cultivate', and 'facilitate'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'contribute their time' instead of 'devote their time', and 'enormous practice' instead of 'extensive experience'. The phrase 'radioactivation decay' seems misused in the context of the example provided. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'they want acquire' (missing 'to'), 'This is approach is' (extra 'is'), and 'seen the medical department' (missing 'in'). Additionally, there are sentence fragments, such as 'as it.' and 'because his enormous practice with specification'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over complex structures, keeping the score in the 6.0 range.
