Overall Band Score: 6.5 · Cambridge IELTS 18 · 2026-07-29
IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
It has been argued by a number of students of a university that focusing on single subject is not enough for a qualification rather we also have to learn about other fields. On the contrary, other group insists that we should only pay our attention and time to related subjects. Here the both views are discussed and my opinion is provided in the final paragraph.
The first and foremost reason that the initial category of pupils would have stated is that it is very beneficial to have fundamental knowledge of multiple subjects as it provides more chances to exceed others and secure more opportunities. It is evidenced by an incident in my company, where once I recommended one of my friends for job but he was rejected by hiring manager. Curious, I asked HR(hiring manager) the reason of the rejection and he explained that this post requires 4 different skills but my friend lacked two, that's why my friend was rejected. So, it is highly appreciated to learn multiple skills while focusing on single main subject as it boosts our chances to get a job.
The following group must be afraid of getting confused while learning several subjects and ending up with low grades in the main subject. It could have drastic effects to learn multiple subjects at the same time because it depends on the intelligence of the learner.
Encapsulating all the debate, I would like to put forward that learning a variety of subjects is only appreciable when the student can stand the work load and along side he/she must focus mainly only on main subject. In my opinion, learning a number of subjects is subjective and is dependent on the personal qualities of students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the first body paragraph provides a relevant personal example, the second body paragraph regarding the opposing view is quite brief and lacks depth or supporting evidence. The conclusion attempts to synthesize the views but introduces a new nuance—the student's personal capacity—which could have been better integrated earlier. To reach a higher band, ensure that both sides of the argument are developed with equal weight and that the opinion is consistently supported throughout the essay rather than just summarized at the end.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the contrary', 'The first and foremost reason', and 'Encapsulating all the debate'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the second body paragraph and the conclusion is somewhat abrupt. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for the task, and the overall structure allows the reader to follow the argument without significant difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'fundamental knowledge', 'work load', and 'qualification'. However, there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'exceed others' (perhaps 'outperform others' or 'gain a competitive edge' would be better) and 'initial category of pupils' (which sounds a bit academic in an awkward way). There are no major spelling errors, but the vocabulary lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of collocations would significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'focusing on single subject' (missing an article), 'recommended one of my friends for job' (missing an article), and 'the hiring manager' (redundant explanation). Additionally, 'It could have drastic effects to learn' is slightly awkward. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage (a/an/the) and subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move toward a higher band.
