Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, the propose of higher education has become the matter of considerable public interest, prompting an intense debate among the public. While some people argue that students should focus on their main degree program to secure a qualification, others believe that exploring additional courses is highly beneficial. From my perspective, while focusing on a core major is vital for deep specialization , a broader education creates a more adaptable and well rounded professionals. In this essay, I will explain some reason with examples in order to support my opinion.

On the one hand, dedicating all academic time to a primary course allows the pupils to get deep understanding of their chosen field. More industries require specialized skills. For instance, if a medical student

splits their attention between unrelated subjects like art history, they may get confused about their medical concepts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the response is incomplete, as it cuts off abruptly in the conclusion. Because the essay is under the 250-word minimum, the development of ideas is limited. While the arguments regarding specialization versus a broader education are relevant, they lack the depth and supporting evidence required for a higher band. The failure to finish the final paragraph significantly impacts the overall task completion, as the conclusion is not fully realized.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with clear transitions such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, the abrupt ending disrupts the flow of the text. Cohesive devices are used, but they are somewhat mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the lack of a completed conclusion means the essay fails to provide a final summary or a fully developed final thought, which affects the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with attempts at academic phrasing such as 'deep specialization' and 'rapidly changing job market'. However, there are some errors in word choice and form, such as 'propose' instead of 'purpose' and 'labor' used incorrectly to mean 'the workforce'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Spelling errors like 'beleive' and 'nd' also detract from the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'explain some reason' (should be plural), 'a student who takes courses of medical and business' (should be 'medicine and business'), and 'will be much better to design' (should be 'better at designing'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete final sentence makes it difficult to assess the full range of the writer's grammatical control. The errors present do not typically impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score.
