Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some university pupils argue to learn other courses at their university ,while on the other hand, some firmly believe that they should solely focus on their courses. However , I agree that student should be given a choice to learn various subjects at their university level to enhance their depth of knowledge .

Students learning other courses rather than their own courses would increase their knowledge .This process about learning and understanding other subjects will increase their level of understanding . A student being a multi-task person would lead them to have a treasure of knowledge ,which would help them at their future .Learning other subjects is the sign of being a genius.

However,if a student is bound to read and learn only their own courses would halt students creativity. This would lack the motivation .My younger brother is only studying ,what is being taught to him is less competitive as compare to my another brother who is always keen to learn other courses , he seems sharp and confident .Therefore students should be given a chance to learn other subjects.

Moreover, there are two groups of students , one group is studying their courses only ,at the other hand ,another group is studying additional subjects , if we check their wisdom ,then without any doubt ,those students who are always keen to learn more subjects would be consider sharper as compare to those who are only bound to study their courses only, so students should be encourage in-order to learn and study other courses.

To conclude, students should always be motivated to learn other courses rather than their subjects, this process would instil wisdom at their brain.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument that learning other subjects makes one a 'genius' or increases 'wisdom' is asserted rather than logically explained or supported with concrete academic examples. The points regarding the brother are relevant but could be expanded to better illustrate the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach. To reach a higher band, you should focus on providing more nuanced reasoning and specific examples that demonstrate the practical advantages of a broader curriculum in a university context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'at the other hand' and 'in-order to'. The transition between paragraphs is functional but could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, but the repetition of phrases like 'study their courses' makes the flow feel somewhat restricted. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'knowledge', 'subjects', and 'courses' repeatedly. There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'instil wisdom at their brain' (should be 'in their minds') and 'multi-task person'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated or topic-specific vocabulary limits the score. Incorporating more precise academic terminology would significantly improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect preposition use ('at their university level'), subject-verb agreement ('students should be encourage'), and awkward phrasing ('as compare to'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the text. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for small errors would be beneficial.
