IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, more and more people are concerned to study some other subjects, parallel to their major subjects, while others argue that one should focus on his major subject, rather than paying attention to additional subjects in order to be professional in their qualification. I acknowledge that both aspects have their own importacne.

In recent years, due to the interference of social media in our lives, people got motivated by influencers about a skill or program on social media, so they start learning these programs. Additionally, there might be a reason that some become motivated by that saying: Skills pays the bills. This thing might become with the aim to learn new skills, which are in market, nowadays. Usually, students want to have some other skills, which might help them to improve thier portfolio, aslo it would be helpful for them in their practical life.

However, others argue that students should be committed to their major, because that subject would help them to make their promising future. Furthermore, if student focus on other additional subjects, which have no connection to their major, then its result could be devastating, in terms of result and concepts grip. Consequently, they will fail in their exams. It is saying, a person should not board two different boards, this would drown him. Similarly, in case of students if students pay attention to other subjects, then it would have a negative effect on their grades, mental health, physical health and on other factors.

In conclusion, both approaches have their own solid supporting arguments, but I am convinced over learning some new subjects and skills too, rather than focusing on just major subject, this ultimately, would help them in their practical life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding social media influencers is a bit tangential and lacks a strong connection to the academic context. The opposing view is better developed, but the supporting points, such as 'mental health' and 'physical health,' are mentioned without sufficient explanation or examples. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that each point is fully extended with specific, relevant examples that directly relate to the university experience.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally,' 'However,' and 'Consequently' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'This thing might become with the aim to learn new skills.' The use of cohesive devices is adequate, but more variety and smoother integration would improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'concepts grip' and 'interference of social media.' While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited to common, everyday language. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to education and professional development. Spelling errors, such as 'importacne,' 'thier,' and 'aslo,' are present and should be addressed.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with article usage, subject-verb agreement, and sentence construction (e.g., 'This thing might become with the aim to learn new skills' and 'if student focus'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate better control over complex structures and ensure that your sentences are grammatically accurate, particularly regarding pluralization and verb tense consistency.
