Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument, but the development is significantly underdeveloped. The introduction is a single, run-on sentence that fails to clearly state a position. The body paragraphs provide basic examples, but they lack depth and analytical rigor. Furthermore, the prompt asks for your own opinion, which is entirely missing from the essay. The conclusion is also very brief and does not synthesize the arguments or restate a position. To improve, you must ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence, detailed supporting evidence, and a concluding thought that links back to the prompt's requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow of ideas is hindered by poor sentence structure and a lack of cohesive devices. Many sentences are joined by commas or run-on, making it difficult to follow the logical progression. There is a lack of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to connect ideas between and within paragraphs. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structure feels mechanical rather than fluid. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'univiersity', 'carriers' (instead of 'careers'), 'acquring', and 'persuied'. The range of vocabulary is basic, relying on simple terms like 'important', 'time', and 'subjects'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and collocations. For example, instead of 'waste of time', you could use 'inefficient use of resources' or 'detrimental to academic focus'. You should also focus on proofreading to eliminate basic spelling errors that distract the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that impede readability. There are significant issues with sentence construction, including run-on sentences and fragments. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent (e.g., 'a student... have interest'), and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Punctuation is also problematic, with many sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation or using commas incorrectly. To improve, you need to focus on mastering basic sentence patterns before attempting more complex structures. Ensure that every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and practice using conjunctions and relative clauses to combine simple ideas into more sophisticated, error-free sentences.
