Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argue that some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects, while others believe that it is more important to give all the time and attention to studying for a qualification.Although both perspective have their merits,I believe that students should focused on qualification subjects while gaining some knowledge of other subjects. This essay will discuss both views before representing my own opinion.

On the hand who argue that university students want to learn about others subjects in addition to their main subjects believe that it can provide them with broader knowledge and useful skills. This is largely because studying different subjects enables students to understand various areas of life and develop new interests. For eample,if a student is studying engineering could learn basic subjects such as business or communication skills, which help them in the career. Therefore,it is understandable why this viewpoint is widely supported.

On the other hand proponents of focusing entirely on their main subjects argue that students only need to concentrate on their qualification. This is because university course are often difficult and require considerable time and effort,Leading to better academic performances.Furthermore, the students who focused on their qualification subjects they can develop deeper knowledge and become more skilled in their chosen fields. As a result, many people consider this to be a more practical approach.

From my perspective, although both argumentsbhave some validity, attention on main subjects is more convincing. This is primarily because strong academic knowledge is essential for students to achieve good results and obtain better career oppurtunities.Consequently students should prioritised their main subjects.

In conclusion, while some people support learning additional subjects and others favour in focusing on main qualification subjects,I believe that attention on main subjects is more effective approach due to its long-term benefits.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument for focusing on main subjects is stated in the third paragraph and then restated in the fourth without significant new depth. While the position is consistent, the supporting examples, such as the engineering student learning business, are a bit generic. To reach a higher band, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of how these two approaches impact long-term professional success or personal development, rather than simply reiterating the need for focus.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical issues with cohesion, such as the missing space after commas (e.g., 'subjects, while' and 'merits,I') and the awkward phrasing in 'On the hand who argue'. These minor errors in punctuation and linking occasionally make the flow feel slightly disjointed, preventing a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use academic vocabulary, such as 'proponents', 'validity', and 'prioritised'. However, there are several word-choice errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'oppurtunities' and 'argumentsbhave'. The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. The repetition of basic terms like 'subjects' and 'qualification' suggests a need for a broader range of synonyms to improve the sophistication of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage. Examples include 'It is often argue' (should be 'argued'), 'university course are' (should be 'courses'), and 'the students who focused... they can develop' (redundant pronoun). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several missing spaces after commas. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they do not impede overall communication. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
