Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argue whether university students focus on their main subjects or gain knowledge apart from their main course. While concecntraring only main course curriculum brings academic benefit, I strongly believe that undergraduate students should focus on diversified subjects in addition to their main subjects.

On the one hand, focusing only on main subjects provide a number of benefit to the students. First and foremost, students can able to make an excellent result in their undergraduate degree, if they give attention to their main course curriculumn. By focusing on single study area, students can learn the concept thoroughly. As a result, they may able to answer any creative question successfully. In addition, had concentrating on main subjects, undergraduate students will specialise in their subject area. For example, a medical student has to focus on medicine, histology, and others subject for knowing the health mechanism deeply. Therefore, he may specialise in human health and able to identify the health problems effectively.

On the other hand, focusing on others subject apart from the main subject areas allow students to become a holistic in nature. Because, by giving attention to a wide variety of subjects, a student learns diversified knowledge. For instance, if a student from computer science department study economics, he will understand the economic phenomena and solve any kind of problem related to production and distribution effectively. What is more, study on diversified subjects allow students better career opportunities. Since the various multinational companies are recruiting employees from diversified subject areas, the undergraduate students has more career prospect than the other students who only focus on their main subjects.

In conclusion, although giving emphasize on main subjects provide benefit to the students academically, I firmly believe that undergraduate students should learn about others subject in addition to their main subjects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the medical student and the computer science student. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; the arguments could be extended further to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To improve, ensure that the explanation of why these subjects are beneficial is more nuanced, moving beyond simple statements to deeper analysis of the long-term impact on a student's professional and personal development.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the second paragraph ('had concentrating on main subjects'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'curriculum', 'specialise', 'holistic', and 'phenomena'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'It is argue' (should be 'It is argued'), 'make an excellent result' (should be 'achieve excellent results'), and 'giving emphasize' (should be 'placing emphasis'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and verb forms, such as 'students can able to' (should be 'students are able to') and 'the undergraduate students has' (should be 'undergraduate students have'). Additionally, there are errors in sentence construction, such as 'had concentrating on main subjects' and 'study on diversified subjects'. These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text, though they rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning.
