Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that university education plays an important role in students live. Many university students want to learn additional subject to increase their productivity in different fields. The essay will discuss both views, I believe that learning other subjects in their free time help students to be more practical and creative in their studies.

To begin with, students of this generation have more practical thinking related to their future and career for the better result in their life. Students decide their subject according to their interests in different career types. Studying their main subjects give them the professional knowledge about their career field. which is necessary for their work placement and future job opportunities. if they do not give all their time and attention to qualify for their main subjects, they might lower their scores in exam. when student learn additional subject which limits their time for examinations and assessments preparation of their main courses. in addition, students should focus on their main subject as it improves their academic performance and deep understanding.

many student learn additional subjects because of their personal interests like learning new programs, painting or sport during their university years. which encourage students to be more creative and to think out of the box. as a result, students can keep their different perspective while choosing different career options after graduation. moreover, students learn those additional subject with their main subject which can cause problems in their overall performance. i believe that students should prefer to learn more different subject that increases their creativity but during their summer breaks or in their vacation. as a result, they perform well in both main subjects and other subjects too.

in conclusion, i believe that students should know how to balance their interest with their academic performance. universities should give extra-curricular activities to students to show their talent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you mention the benefits of focusing on main subjects and the creative advantages of learning additional subjects, the arguments lack depth and specific examples. For instance, you mention 'learning new programs' but do not explain how this specifically impacts a student's career trajectory. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is supported by a clear, logical explanation or a concrete example. The position is consistent, but the supporting arguments could be more thoroughly explored to fully satisfy the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion'. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly inaccurate, such as starting sentences with 'which' or 'if' without proper integration into the preceding clause. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, which affects the flow. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words and ensuring that each sentence is grammatically connected to the next will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'work placement', 'career opportunities', and 'academic performance'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on repetitive phrasing. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'students live' (should be 'students' lives') and 'learn more different subject' (should be 'learn a wider variety of subjects'). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations to demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'student learn' instead of 'students learn'), missing articles, and punctuation errors, particularly with sentence fragments starting with 'which'. While you attempt complex sentences, they are often marred by these errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly. Proofreading for these recurring errors will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
