IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that many university scholars wish to learn about other lessons alongside their original subjects, whereas others think a dedicated time and priority should be given to studying for a qualifications. I believe, students should be able to learn other subjects as it would increase their knowledge outside of the classroom.
Learning other subjects in addition to text books increases students' knowledge and thought process. They get additional ideas about topic that are not covered in traditional classroom syllabus. For example, they can learn a new language, about music and it's history or money management, which would develop their interest in vast areas. This works similar to extracurricular activities improving students' cognitive condition while still completing mandatory courses.
However, there are many students who think its more important to study for a degree which would fundamentally shape their future and so the entire time and focus should be given to that. There is no doubt that traditional classroom lessons create the foundation which are required to understand and learn basic things to prepare us for future labor market. Nevertheless, prioritizing only that would make students' memorize and put less emphasis on creative mindset. Moreover, when everyone is learning the same lesson, it becomes hard to differentiate themselves in the job market as everyone has the similar level of knowledge and qualification. Hence, additional lessons with regular subjects enhances one's creativity and knowledge about topics that differentiate them from others giving them more competitive edge. For example, i learnt basic Chinese as a non-credit course during my bachelors arranged by my department, which helped me land my first internship in a Chinese company who needed people understanding their language.
In conclusion, i firmly believe that, students should learn about other subjects while still completing mandatory courses as it gives the competitive advantage in the future labor market and enhances their knowledge capability.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The essay addresses the task effectively by discussing both views about students learning additional subjects outside their main field of study. The student expresses a clear opinion, advocating for the inclusion of broader subjects to enhance competitiveness and knowledge. However, while the arguments are relevant, more explicit examples to reinforce points made would have strengthened the response. Overall, the main ideas are presented, but further development and supporting details are needed to achieve a higher score. **Task Achievement Band Score: 6.5**
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The coherence and cohesion of the response are quite solid, with a clear structure evident in the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Ideas transition smoothly, and cohesive devices are used effectively, such as "However," and "In conclusion," allowing the reader to follow the argument easily. Yet, there are some areas that could benefit from clearer topic sentences or more distinct connections between paragraphs for further clarity. **Coherence And Cohesion Band Score: 7.0**
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The lexical resource displayed in the essay is varied, demonstrating an ability to use less common vocabulary with phrases like "cognitive condition" and "competitive edge." However, there are instances of awkward wording, such as "studying for a qualifications" instead of "studying for a qualification," which affects clarity. Additionally, phrases like "text books" could be more effectively expressed as "course materials." More precise vocabulary could enhance the formal tone suitable for an academic essay. **Lexical Resource Band Score: 6.5**
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The grammatical range and accuracy in the essay show a mix of complex and simple sentence structures. While the majority of sentences are clear, there are occasional errors that affect clarity, such as "its more important" (should be "it's more important") and incorrect punctuation in "history or money management, which would develop..." Nonetheless, the attempt at using a variety of sentence forms and complex structures is commendable. Precision in grammar usage should be improved for higher accuracy. **Grammatical Range Accuracy Band Score: 6.5**
Overall feedback
Your essay effectively addresses the topic and presents clear arguments for your viewpoint, which is a definite strength. The structure is logical, and your use of cohesive devices helps in connecting ideas. However, to improve clarity and strength of your arguments, I recommend providing more detailed examples and ensuring precise language use. Look out for small grammatical errors and awkward phrases as eliminating these will enhance the overall quality of your writing. Consider revising sentences to ensure they are grammatically accurate and utilize more precise vocabulary.
