IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely recognized that choosing a study plan is one of the most debatable issues in modern society. Some people argue that students should learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. While a few individuals believe it is more important to spend all their time focusing on qualifications. I maintain balanced opinion, and I will discuss my supporting ideas further in this essay.
On the one hand, focusing completely on the main subjects builds deep knowledge. Hard subjects like medical, engineering, and law demand full attention and consistency practice with practical skills. In addition, Students who give all their time to these core courses often get higher grades. For example, computer science students must spend all their time studying programming languages and practical skills instead of taking other classes.
On the other hand, exploring different subjects helps develop broader skills and improves creative thinking. The modern job market changes very quickly, and famous companies now look for flexible workers everywhere. For example, a business student who learn graphic design can handle many different tasks at work. It helps students stay highly motivated and teaches them to solve daily problem from anywhere.
In my opinion, finding a proper balanced is the most effective choice for everyone. Students must first priority to their core subjects to secure a good wealthy job. However, taking one or two extra elective classes offers great personal growth without causing academic stress.
To conclude, although studying other subjects is helpful for personal and professional development, students should focus mainly on excelling in their major. I firmly believe that a balanced approach is more crucial in students' future life as they develop with modern technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on deep knowledge for specialized fields and the benefits of broader skills for the modern job market. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed. For instance, the example of a business student learning graphic design is a good start, but it could be expanded to better illustrate how this specifically aids career flexibility. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points while reiterating the balanced stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the sentence fragment 'While a few individuals believe it is more important to spend all their time focusing on qualifications,' which should be linked to the previous sentence. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'debatable issues' and 'professional development.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'consistency practice' instead of 'consistent practice' and 'proper balanced' instead of 'proper balance.' Additionally, 'secure a good wealthy job' is slightly unnatural; 'lucrative career' would be more precise. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, more sophisticated vocabulary and precise collocations would be required to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. Examples include 'a business student who learn graphic design' (subject-verb agreement error), 'solve daily problem' (pluralization error), and 'Students must first priority to their core subjects' (incorrect verb usage). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a lack of consistent control over complex structures. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of verbs versus nouns.
