IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is widely discussed if the higher-institutes students could learn the subjects they would like in addition to their university syllabus while others think they need to dedicate their precious time and focus to studying for their degree. The essay will discuss both views regarding students benefits or drawbacks. In my opinion the students need to concentrate on their university program because dealing with studies already take too much time and effort.
On the one hand, the argument in favour that university students might stick to their studies without considering others subjects they would like to study is the lack of time to recover additional subjects, the syllabus for higher studies often tough and demand attention and a well prepared plan, however adding the other personal study material inside might made it more difficult. Moreover adding more subjects in syllabus means the university need more professors, as a result, increase university, as well as, students budget and not all students are able to pay further expenses.
On the other hand, addition subjects demanding by students can enhance their knowledge in a specific field, it will might help in the upcoming years regarding their future employment. They need to communicate with their teachers that they are able to study other subjects they like in their free time and pay extra money to university to cover the expenses. For example, many universities in European countries let their children decide if they wish to study any new subject and they pay to studies in their extra time.
In conclusion, the learners need to dedicate their time and focus to studies their main subjects, only if they have time and they are financially strong, they need to communicate with the university to teach them extra subjects that they wish to study.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the financial burden of hiring more professors is a bit speculative and lacks depth. The discussion on the benefits of learning extra subjects is also brief. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete examples or deeper analysis of why these subjects might be beneficial for future employment. The position is consistent, but the supporting arguments need more elaboration to fully satisfy the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by grammatical errors. For example, the sentence 'the syllabus for higher studies often tough and demand attention and a well prepared plan, however adding the other personal study material inside might made it more difficult' is a run-on that lacks proper punctuation, which hinders the smooth flow of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'syllabus', 'higher studies', and 'financial expenses'. However, there are instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'higher-institutes students' instead of 'university students' and 'recover additional subjects' instead of 'take additional subjects'. There is also a lack of less common lexical items that would demonstrate a more sophisticated range. Focusing on collocations and more precise academic terminology will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('studies already take' should be 'studies already take' or 'studying takes'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms ('might made it' should be 'might make it'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas in long, complex sentences. While these errors do not completely prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors will be beneficial.
