IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many universty students prefer to study additional subjects along with their main field of study , while others think that they should focus completely on their qualification. Both views have their own advantages, but I believe that students should maintain a balance between their main subject and other areas of knowlwdge.
On the one hand, learning extra subjects can provide students with a wider range of skills and knowledge. In today's competitive world, employers often look for people who have different abilities rather than only academic qualifications. For example, a medical student who learns communication skills or computer science may have better career opportunities in the future. Furthermore, studying different subjects can improve creativity and help students understand problems from various perspectives.
on the other hand, some people argue that university students should concentrate only on their main subjects. A qualification usually requires a great deal of time and effort, and studying unrelated subjects may distract students from their primary goals. For instance, engineering students need to spend many hours on practical work and technical studies to become successful professionals. Therefore, giving too much attention to other subjects could effect their academic performance.
In my opinion, students should not completely ignore other fields of study because additional knowledge can be beneficial in personal and professional life. However, their main priority should remain their degree subjects. They should manage their time effectively so that they can gain extra skills without damaging their academic progress.
In conclusion, although focusing only a qualification has clear benefits, learning other subjects can also be valuable. I believe that the best approach is to give priority to the main subject while exploring other areas when possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the medical student learning communication skills and the engineering student focusing on technical work. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be slightly more nuanced, perhaps by exploring the long-term societal benefits of interdisciplinary study versus the immediate economic necessity of specialization. However, the current level of development is sufficient for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The transition between the two opposing views and the author's own opinion is smooth and well-managed, ensuring the reader remains engaged with the logical flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. The student uses terms like 'competitive world', 'academic performance', and 'primary goals' effectively. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'universty' and 'knowlwdge', which are likely slips rather than a lack of vocabulary knowledge. While the range is adequate, the essay could benefit from more sophisticated or less common lexical items to demonstrate a higher level of precision. Overall, the vocabulary is used accurately and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There is a minor error in the third paragraph where 'effect' is used instead of the verb 'affect'. Punctuation is generally correct, although there is a minor spacing issue before a comma in the first paragraph. The majority of the sentences are error-free, and the grammatical control is strong enough to ensure that the meaning is always conveyed clearly to the reader.
